Solar Cooking
« on: September 06, 2013, 01:57:25 am »
What food or drink items have you ever made from heating in the sun?  I have made sun tea and baked potatoes all with just the power of the sun for the only heat source.

I have never baked a potato with using solar power. That sounds like it would take a long time. If you just wrap the tater in tin foil and set in in the sun. I would be interested to know all the steps required. I have made su tea, though. I think it is as good a brewed!

Sun tea is the most adventurous I've ever gotten.

I vaguely remember doing this in my car on a HOT day with some pizza, I left the slice in the window (on top the dashboard, still In the box), went to the store for about 30 mins or so, came back, placed on top of box and let it sit for a minute and it was just right :icon_rr:
does that count? solar cooking, interesting concept

i have never tried this before. I have used a magnifying glass to burn some things though so i bet it would work just as well on food.

How long to you have to leave a potato in the sun for it to bake?
I tried sun tea once years ago but it was a disaster.

I have not really cooked anything solar, but is have been looking at some equipment that lets you do a lot of different cooking with. Just have to make up my mind which one i want.

Hard boiled eggs. Filled a black plastic bucket about half way with water, put the eggs in the water, one dozen eggs as I recall, covered the bucket with a clear pane of plastic and just let it sit in direct sun light for about three hours. The eggs were a bit over done but edible. The water temp. measured 178° when we took the eggs out, so I guess if one were to let the water heat to that temp. before adding almost any food that is stew-able you could cook it like that adjusting the time factor appropriately. Always had the intention to play around with this some with other foods but have never gotten around to it.

I'd love to have/make a solar oven.  I make sun tea all the time, but haven't tried anything else.  One day...

I cooked the potatoes the way I would in a regular oven by wrapping them in foil and placeing them in a black BBQ grill which was reading a tempearture of 250 when I pulled them out after 5 hours in the afternoon sun.

that's a neat concept, I will try this on my next day off and see how well it works, could come in handy with things as they are now.
