I desperately need ya'lls help
« on: August 29, 2013, 10:20:14 am »
If anybody can help me or shed some light on this question I would greatly appreciate it.  Okay here is the deal...3 weeks ago I was hired for a company.  I signed the offer of employment.  Was told my pay wage and sent for a drug screen.  Although these usually take 3 days supposedly mine took almost 16 days.  Anyway, I went in and caught the HR person out on the floor (so she had to talk to me lol) and was told 'oh there is a hiring freeze so we can't bring you in until it is lifted'.  That doesn't make sense.  I am already hired.  I passed the drug trest and that is all we were waiting on.  I don't see how the hiring freeze could effect me.  Just the tons of people they are still interviewing.  I guess they can do this.  They can do whatever they want.  I just don't see how it is legal or right.  I was already hired just never got to actually start working.  And now they are saying 'just keep waiting'  I tried to ask when she thought I would get to work but she was kind of hateful and said she didn't know.  Smh.   :dontknow:

Werid to say the least, but you know people hire who they want, move on and try to find another job, because this company sounds strange to me. :dontknow:

Technically you're not considered "hired" by a company until they get your paperwork entered into their system (particularly if you are talking larger companies).  If their procedure is not to enter you into their system until they get the results of your drug test, and if the hiring freeze was put in place before your results arrived - that means they have no way to enter you into their system until the freeze is lifted.

They could get you working, but would have no means to log your time or pay you.

Ask around to see if these type of hiring freezes is common for this company, and if so, how long do the freezes last to decide whether it's worth waiting around for it.

My instinct would be to keep searching for other jobs in the mean time.  Who knows, maybe you'll find something better.

I know of companies that have hired people and then immediately lay them off soon thereafter. Maybe it's better to be caught in a hiring freeze then to start a job and then get laid off. Think about it from that angle. Just keep in touch with human resources and stay in their good graces so you'll be first be un-frozen so you can start working.

That's too weird, I've never heard of hired but you're in a frozen status. If you have to wait, you need to be getting paid for your time! I say, go over the hr & head strenght to head boss. It's not like you'd get fired since you've been placed on stand bye position without pay.Look for another job, while you find out what's going on. Also, I'd try to get to know those other people still being interviewed even though you've been told there's been a hiring freeze.  there should be a law against employeers pulling people's chain when there's so many people out of the job & desperate to find anything! It's just not right!Good luck, I hope you find a better job then those jokers that's been playing with your soul! :peace:

I have never of this in my life.  When they hire you they put you on the schedule and that's that.  If they don't put you to work right away I would look for another job.

My instinct would be to keep searching for other jobs in the mean time.  Who knows, maybe you'll find something better.

My info is entered into their system.  I was there when they done it.  I actually entered part of it in myself while sitting beside the manager.  The company is Walmart.  If something else comes along then no it isn't worth waiting for.  But I have been looking for a while and this is all that has come along.  I have been looking the past few days.  There just isn't anything to find.  Honestly, this hiring freeze (I don't even know if it is real because I am good friends with a manager there and she knew nothing about it and she worked yesterday) if it really happened just happened like today. lol.  I sort of wondered if they are waiting to see if we go to war again.  I don't know.  I am just really frustrated.

With a company as big as Walmart, just because they started an electronic file doesn't mean the file was submitted to corporate offices.  Most likely they needed to wait for your test results to enter those onto the file, then submit it to human resources for processing.  When a freeze goes into effect, write access to all applications in process cannot be edited or be further processed in the system.  It's not until the human resources department registers your file as an active employee, assigns you an employee number, etc that one is considered "hired".

In larger companies like Walmart, getting your file stuck somewhere along the long bureaucratic hiring chain is possible.  Typically doesn't happen, but based on the timing it is possible.

When I was hired at my company years ago (yes, I've been fortunate) - it took 3 weeks for them to process my application before I was finally officially "hired" - even after I did the tests and filled out paperwork, etc.

Now is the hiring manager in your particular location telling you a tale or is there really a freeze?  Don't know.  Good luck if you are still searching, and hope that "freeze" is lifted soon.

I wouldn't diss the company but I would also make it a point to look elsewhere while the "freeze" is in place. The best thing you can do is keep checking in and hope that they can hire you on soon. I've never hear of an incident like that before. There is always the possibility of legal action if you feel you were discriminated against for some reason but I doubt it would be an easy route to go and would certainly hurt your chances of getting hired on later by the company. Although it wouldn't hurt to maybe get some free legal advice sometimes there are students in a law program or community programs that offer cheap advice.

Sorry, to say but you may have been hired, but you were not on the payroll.  Therefore they put a freeze on bringing more people in as employees.  I know it doesn't seem fair, but with most companies they conduct hiring as they see fit.  As for the HR person being nasty, the do not care or empathize.  They never think that being unemployed will happen to them.

Hi,
I am so sorry that happened.  Walmart is a terrible company to work for.  My best friend used to work there.  They refused to give her bathroom breaks.  If I were you, I would look for a job with another company that knows how to treat people.

Clearly a drug test was required for you to be hired so I wouldn't consider you 'hired' at this point.  From the outside looking in it seems very reasonable that they wouldn't put you to work until they got the results.

Your situation is quite odd and unfornuate.  I do know companies change their mind all the time about hiring.  Sometimes a lower level manager will want to hire someone to help out with the workload but someone higher up will veto the hire thus putting the positon on hold or cancelled or what could also be known as a hiring freeze.

I have been interviewing a lot this summer and I have already had 4-5 positions I was interviewing for be cancelled or put on hold even though I and others were interviewing for the position, but never after an offer was made.

Most all companies have something call purchase requisitions that are placed for everything from offices supplies to purchasing a lare piece of equipment to hiring a new employee that goes through an approval process before the product or person is acutally ordered/hired.

I have heard Wal-Mart is not the best company to work for especially in our area.  Because of their employment policies, I try to limit my spending at their store as much as possible.
Have a wonderful day!

How sad, If I were you. I would keep on trying to get another job. You don't know how long this freeze is going to take. If you find another job great if the freeze comes out before you find a job that's even greater new. Good luck!  ;)
