School Supplies Needed

@paints - I agree with you.  Walmart is the last resort for me!

@ harleyy2 I'd rather pay more somewhere else than shop at Walmart. Walmart is the Monsanto of the retail world. Toxic.

@paints - I laughed when I saw the Walmart commercial on TV comparing their prices are lower than Dollar General however Dollar General's prices are lower (for a majority of things of course!).

If you have a Dollar General or Dollar Tree nearby, they sell the same things as Walmart, and it's cheaper.

Most of the things on school list is a volunteer to give these things like Clorox wipes and dry erasers for the teachers. Teachers also come out of their pocket and buy items also and many of it is for the kids also. Stickers, prizes for a job well done etc. The community is also chipping in, I returned my son back to public school and his school has a guy who donates instruments so the kids can have music classes. The music teacher volunteers his time to teach the kids. So in all the things they ask of parents is to make sure the supplies last through out the year. If you can donate of course. It is not mandatory because if you can not afford they will not make you do it.

Not the schools in my town.  It's a list of required items.  Of course a lot of parents refuse and I guess they don't kick them out if they don't bring them.  When I was in school we didn't have a box of kleenex.  If you had a snotty nose you either used toilet paper or brought your own small pack of kleenex.    If it said "volunteer" it wouldn't make people so mad.  The biggest in my area is saying bring a big box of pencils to share with the class.  Screw that!  You can get pencils for free at banks and all kinds of places if you can't afford the 10 cent ones at the store.  It's not right to expect somebody else to provide for your child.  Of course I am referring to the ones who are just too lazy to provide for their children.  At the same time it isn't the kid's fault that the parents do not care.  Maybe it's just where I live but I know parents who will spend all their money on drugs, lotto tickets, cigs, and so on and then cry because they can't buy school supplies.  That just makes me mad.  The kids in my life get stuff before I do.

Also, you think things are bad now --- just wait til they ask you to purchase an ipad for your kid.  I see it coming.  it would kind of make sense cause you have this one thing and all your books could be on the ipad but they are not cheap.  I have heard that some classes use them already.  And in the depressed area I live in there is no way most people could afford that.

And someone mentioned using the back of a piece of paper...I remember some teachers wouldn't even allow that.  Was messy or something. 

In my son school they have a ipad for each student. The school gets a lot of donated things and donated money. I think my son's school is blessed and surely thankful for the help they get. It is sad bout the situation of your area. Hopefully one day things will get better.

That is sad and yes I would be mad as hell. I always think of my son needs before mines. Your a good Mom.

I do not have kids, but I helped my Nephew with his school supplies.  Man 2nd graders need a lot of stuff!

I would try target and recently I learned that the dollar store has a lot of the great stuff you need and its obvoiusly affordable

I couldn't believe the price of binders in the store this last weekend.  They must be made of gold!  And this was the time for cheap prices at the beginning of school.  What makes them so darn expensive!?

As you probably know by now Back to School is big business for retailers and the parents are really footing the bill especially if there are multiple kids in the family. Before you even get to the school supplies you probably had to buy clothes and shoes. The only good thing is the non-tax days for buying clothes, computer tablets and school supplies. The only thing this year that I didn't see was kids having to buy the big expensive TI-84 calculator.

I cant even find the school supplies in the same store, so I have to hop from one to another. This is too much hassle.
