Everyone has an accent.

Actually, it is entirely possible to be devoid of an accent. It comes from speaking each word as it is intended to be pronounced vice with the slurs and alterations that are more pronounced in certain regions.

I guess it comes from being in a military area in the mid-atlantic region. We're neither northern nor southern.  :dontknow:

accent is perspective....

to the brits... we all have accents.....

to sotherners.... yankees have accents....

to us northerners it's you hill billys that have the accent.....

as far as "speaking each word as it is intended to be pronounced"....

if that were the case we'd all still be speaking the proper "Queens English" -----> http://www.ic.arizona.edu/~lsp/QueensEnglish.html

but even in England they have many different dialects (accents)

so back to my original statement....

accent is perspective....

"Distance has the same effect on the mind as on the eye."  - Samuel Johnson

"It all depends on how we look at things, and not how they are in themselves."  - Carl Jung

"Perception is a mirror not a fact. And what I look on is my state of mind, reflected outward."  - A Course In Miracles

"However, no two people see the external world in exactly the same way. To every separate person a thing is what he thinks it is --in other words, not a thing, but a think."  - Penelope Fitzgerald

I am from Louisiana and of course when I travel I have the accent, but at home my family swears I was never raised here because I have a Jersey twist to some words. Maybe picked that up when I was working in a call center and my area was the northeast. Also, I pick up on other's accents while I am around them, too.
My hubby can tell when I've been on the phone with my Canadian friend, lol

I can't say for sure if Kansans have a specific accent. I certainly don't hear it. But it depends on perspective. I know someone from North Carolina who has a very strong accent, and according to him, our "accents" sound really funny.
But as for me individually, I have a STRONG Internet accent. As in, I will randomly start speaking 1337 OUT LOUD, and actually PRONOUNCING it, for no reason whatsoever. Ha. I'm weird.

I met a DJ from Austrailia once and he was talking about how we all had "american" accents, but I'm sure he didn't think he had an Austrailian accent.

I grew up in Albany, NY, but now I live in the city. I plan my company's presence at trade shows, so I travel all over the country. Whenever I go someplace in the south (even N. Carolina) I get asked if I'm from around there. I guess I have an accent, but I'm not sure what it is. Maybe a country twang? Does that count?
