Everyone, of course, has an accent, but do you have an accent which is often greeted by a double-take and a response of "You're not from around here, are you?," Or: "What country are you from"? Born and raised in England, I encountered this many times when I first moved to the U.S. (MANY years ago). But, even now, I am asked, "Are you from Australia--South Africa--Canada?" I STILL cannot order fast food at a drive through window..I have always been met with the response.."I cannot understand you--would you please come inside to place your order?" I guess some things never change (or little, anyway), and accents seem to be one of those things. I don't think it is a bad thing, really (maybe a little frustrating), but it reminds me constantly of who I am and from where I originated. Being an ex-pat of the UK, the U.S. is MY home, but the U.K. will always be my country.
