From my understanding you just commit on other post and as long as it contributes to the discussion you are doing ok.  You can start your own discussion as well.  You have to have 30 post a month to receive credit.  The post doesn't have to be long just contributing to the post.

You just asked a question,

But if you want to know how to start a new topic, go to the Home page and pick a board to post to, then scroll down to find the Start New Topic button (blue)
