I live on part of 110 acres of countryside in West Point, MS.  The area is called Tallie Hill.  When I moved with my husband, who was then my boyfriend, people would just walk in the house.  That was until one night when we were asleep in bed.  His cousin decided to walk in to talk to him because he had slept all day.  He pushed open the door and freaked both of us.  I lived in Chicago for 27 years, and it is not the smartest thing to do, simply because you might get shot doing something like that.  I like to check the door before I go to bed, because I am not comfortable with people walking in on me.  I am asking whether you live in an area where everyone knows everyone and is comfortable with them just walking in, or do you live in an area where you are cautious and lock the doors? ??? :o ???

I absolutely lock all doors and windows and set my alarm every night.  All visitors always knock, even family.  Your situation would freak me out.  My daughter does say I live in a"retirement community."  But better safe than sorry.

I lock all doors and put on the alarm system at night.  We all have about 1 to 2 acres in our development, so no we o not just walk into each other's homes, especially in the middle of the night!

I've never lived a community so open like this. I only see this in movies or read in stories. I lock everything and I tend to be cautious with strangers. Even with neighbors I only trust to a certain degree. Maybe the more urban culture at least where I live brings this approach even moreso.

It would be nice to live in a small town like yours.  I live in the city and I keep my doors lock at all times.

We live in Condo, we know our neighbors but we all lock our doors and those of us that have alarm systems set them! I grew up in NY city so that was unheard of and dangerous; while I live in different state now would never  allow people just to  walk into my house;neighbors or anyone else; that's why there are doorbells!

I thought it was just me.  Thanks for your responses.  I know I am totally sane and cautious.  I wanted to see how many people agreed with me about locking your doors at night.  I was just as cautious when I lived in Chicago.  This is like a family community; everyone who lives on this hill is family, but I think that even family should knock when they come to your house.  My brother in-law passed, and my in-laws swamped the house like an army camp.  After he died, I would be the only person in the house, and locked the doors because I am equally cautious about people walking in on me.

I don't care what area I live in or which neighborhood I move to. No one, I repeat, no one can just walk into my house without knocking. That's just rude to me. Don't even think about coming over unannounced either. I may not be dressed

No.  I didn't think those kind of places still exist.  When I grew up you knew all the neighbors on your block.  Where I live I don't know all my neighbor's name, but we wave at each other when we go out.
