Trends From The Past
« on: June 30, 2013, 06:47:53 pm »
So, I'm very curious on this subject.
In today's society, the 'fad' is that many teenage boys sag their pants 'down to their ankles' and many girls part their hair into a style called "Side Swept Bangs" and wear short-shorts that are very high. Tanning is also considered trendy, today.

My question for you is: What were the trends when you were growing up? Did you approve of it back then and think of it as 'hip and cool'? Would you approve of it now? Did you follow this trend and do it when you were younger?

Note that it doesn't only have to apply to clothing. It could be anything from writing a certain way to going to a certain place, and beyond.

I remember when I was in school, elephant leg pants! The super wide bell bottoms. And knee high tennis shoes.

During my teenage years and early 20's it was bell bottoms and hip huggers.  Oh, and crop tops were in fashion too.  And, of course back then I was able to wear those type of clothes and yes, I felt I looked not too bad.  Where has the time and the body gone??  lol

I remember the bell bottoms, hip huggers, and the skirts that were below the knee.  You do know those styles are coming back.  When I was growing up, young men wore a belt snug around their waists, and their underwear were not showing.  The young men nowadays think that it is hip to show their underwear.  All I see is a fashion statement going wrong.  The law in Mississippi says they cannot do that here.  They will get warnings and be fined if it continues. :o :o ???

bottoms was hot it was at the tail end of the bell bottoms when I was wearing them around the 70's then died out. I think around the mid 90's they came back into fashion for a short time. I also like the flowy long sleeved outfit's that makes you look like you have butterfly wings. The hostess cup cakes were the greatest but now, it doesn't taste the same anymore. My husband (RIP2009) use to collect Rat Finks ~don't know what they are but in his day they were popular collectables. The fashion plate set I like is not the same anymore. I remember playing with connect 4 & perfection & many really cool toys that no longer is avalable.

A fad is what we now call trends from the past and a lot of you are my age because you talked about bell bottom jeans and I remember peanut jeans too...

My tennagee years were the late 60's ad early 70's. Amazing that some of the hip groovy things then have made a comeback today like the Lava lamp and Mood rings. Green eyeshadow and thick eyeliner was the makeup of the day. Flower Power was in along with the pyschodelic colors, black light posters and the debut of FM radio. I still love the bright colors and they have seemed to make a return to wardrobes. I wonder if the Perm will make a return?

The fashion trends when I was growing up were the bell bottom pants, flowered tops and platform shoes Because I was so short the bell bottom pants never looked great when they were shortened to fit. I was dying to wear platform shoes because of my lack of height however my lack of balance made that rather a challenge that I had to give up on. :sad1:  fortuneately I am not a slave to fashion! :peace:

I remember growing up, everyone had the really high, teased up hair.  We used can after can of hairspray to get it that way.  It was fine back then but no way I'd do it now!

I think we all have followed trends when we were young and as we get older.  Some trends may not be for everyone, but there are some trends that we may feel work and doesn't work for us as individuals.  I myself am a person who follow certain clothing and hair trends, but only those that work for me.  I can honestly admit, I don't follow every trend, only those I feel work for me personally.

There were several that I recall.  In elementary school there was a brief fad where it was "cool" to wear clogs.  Never got that one - tried some at the shoe stores, could never walk in those things.

In middle/high school, there was something with folding over the end of your pants and cuffing them up once or twice.  Then there was wearing the polo shirt and turning the collar up for that "preppy" look.

On hair styles it was the "big hair" vs the feathered hair vs the mullet.

Then there was the horrible period where "Valley Girl" talk was, like, totally, like, the way to go, man...like, totally for sure!
