I love dogs I once had a full blooded German Sheppard that died. I was told that  a Lab is just as smart. Is that true?

Labs can be very smart. I have a black lab (female). She is very protective of the family. There is some guys in the neighborhood that come up from the back end and try to hop the fence of our yard to get closer to the main  road and she won't let them. Even in the dead of night. If she is out and not in for the night all they hear is a low growl and then she'll bark at them. Because she is black they don't see her. But she also listens well. She knows who we are talking about when we let her in and say go find daddy(meaning my husband) or go find your sisters. She will go to which ever room it is we tell her and stand to wait for attention from that person. She is also very good when we go home to my parents. They both are in a wheelchair and she will pick up the bigger things they drop for them. :dog:

I never had a German Shepherd, but I have a yellow lab.  He is very smart, even when he was a puppy he was smart, it took no time to housebreak him.  He is a great dog, very loving and friendly.  He gets along great with my other dogs, cats, my grandkids, and most people.  He will become very protective of us if he feels "something" is not right. but if we tell him it's ok. he's then fine and will come up to the person for a head rub.

I totally agree, I have always had dogs and both those types of dogs are very smart although they require a lot of attention.

I agree with waterbearer94, I have 5 dogs and they are all rescue.  You can get either mutts or pure breed dogs at the pound.  I have 3 pure breed and 2 mutts.  They all came either from the pound or from rescues on Petfinder, one came from down south, never knew what state, one from Ohio, and the rest from different places in my state (PA).

Most of our dogs have been shelter dogs or abandoned dogs.  German Shepherds and Labs are both very smart.  We have had Black Labs who were smart.  As a matter of fact, we have had many mixed breed dogs who were very intelligent.

I have never had either type of dogs.  I had a Welsh Corgi and he was just a wonderful dog.

German Shepherds are included in the first 5 of dogs that are (arguably) rated as the 'brains' of the canine breeds. The smartest is considered to be the Poodle, followed by the Border Collie. Others are the Doberman Pinscher; German Shepherd and Retrievers (Labrador, Golden, Duck Toling, etc). We often, however, overlook the smarts of mixed-breed dogs and their advantages such as less susceptibility to diseases and their hardier physical abilities. I root for the mongrels! :dog:

I love dogs and had many of them throughout my life time. I think labs are really smart like shepherds.
