Thanks for all the input. I am making a list of the things I need on a computer and watching for sales.I can't afford much.

There will be a lot of sales on computers around July and August as kids will be heading off the college, back to school, etc.

When you buy a new computer, you should do it through the FC Mall.  Then you'll get cash back!

Yes I was hoping to have enough saved by the time school sales started. Staples already has some on clearance.

I didn't know about the mall. How do I get to it. Seems like I learn something new on here everyday.

On the main page there is a banner at the top for the mall

Usually there's a lot of computer sales this time of year so try using this time to window shop. If you're looking for a laptop,
then you'll need to know that the mousepad is smooth and not rough on your fingers. (or you'll need a wireless mouse)
You could also grab a cheap/refurbished computer at your local electronic shop.

Nope, as long as you hook up to the Internet from the same connection as the old one, you will be good to go. When you get the new one all set up, you should install Linux on the old one and I bet you will be surprised how fast it will be.

But you must specify which distro.  Installing Ubuntu (with all the grotesque Unity garbage they threw on it) on a computer that can't handle WinXP won't help a thing, and Kubuntu or Mandriva with KDE can be even worse.

Try Slitaz for really old machines.  If all you do is web browsing, it works amazingly well.  You can even install stuff like LibreOffice on it for word processing if your computer can handle it.
I'm sorry if my recondite verbiage is a little difficult to understand sometimes.  Using fancy vocabulary really is fun, you should try it!

I got a new, well refurbished HP a few months ago. It works well with what I have to do. Good luck I know how it feels to have an old computer.

I use both PCLOS on my desktop and Browser Linux on my laptop

Lol I know I swear my computer was made by the Amish. I think it is older than me. lol

Was your calculator made by the Chinese (abacus or suànpán)?  ;D
My computer is the 'little engine that could'.    "I think I can, I think I can,"
