What I've realized is that a lot of people seem to get stuck in negative things.  Most of the time, if something bad happens, first you get upset, and then you figure out what to do about it.  Most don't get to that second step, they just stay upset about everything.  If you lose your job, you get upset for a bit, but then you realize you need to get another, or maybe go to school so you can get a better job, or maybe start a home business.

It is very, VERY hard to be positive when people around you are negative.  I keep getting people who think my career choice is wrong and that I should go into something else.  My own parents (the ones that paid for it) constantly are like "what are you going to do if you don't get a job in your field" which makes me wonder why they let me go for that degree in the first place.

What I've done is let myself vent about their negativity in whatever way I want (normally written down somehow) and then I say to myself "I am going to prove them wrong."  I have a list of things I want to accomplish, like getting my job and having a nice, safe place to live when I'm out on my own, being healthier, etc.  So, when I start feeling bad, I start repeating those things to myself.  One of my friends suggested phrasing it as "I am..." cause then your start thinking acting that way now, not eventually if it happens.  Don't know if it works yet, but I'm willing to try with all this negativity around me.

Well... I have read all the posts on here and had time to think and act differently. so.... what I did this weekend, was, when the family started talking negatively, I decided I was NOT going to listen to this so I went out for a ride and enjoyed a  few hours by myself. When I got back. the negativity was gone for awhile but came back so I repeated my routine... I went for a ride.. Well..... I THINK they realized what I have done(not listening to negative things anymore)... I even noticed a BIG change in my hubby s words and the way he spoke.. NOW to get the other ones to do the same.. Every time they start talking negatively, I am walking thru the door whether it is to take a walk or ride or clean the yard. Wish me luck!

The thing to do in a situation like that is to focus on your own positivity. Eventually the people around you will become more positive just by your influence.

:BangHead: :angry7:  How can a person have positive thoughts if you live with so many negative people in your house and  80% of the time, they keep saying negative things! One person is my husband. he does not have many positive thoughts. When things go wrong, He says negative things....like when he buys scratch ticket or goes to casino or plays lotteries, he always says I know I wont win. I tell him not to play then, but he still does. The other family memebers say the same stuff. I tell them it would not hurt for them to start thinking POSITIVE a few times but they all seem to repeat their stuff. We arent lucky enough, we will never do this or that... etc, etc. So how many of you go thru this and what would or do you do or say? I want to stay positive! :crybaby2: :angry7:  but cant do it this way!

I really think the only thing you can do is reinforce the positive at every twist and turn and hope and pray they get it!!!  Everyone is a little negative at some time in their life but if the person who is negative is surrounded by the positive surely it will rub off eventually!!!

I understand totally.  My mom lives with me, she's 76..and says she's never had one single good day in her life. (To which I always reply thanks, so glad my birth helped make you miserable lol).  Her entire day is filled with one complaint after another, all day long.  It can be really hard but I look at it in this way...It helps me be even more determined to look at the bright side of things so I don't turn out the same way :)
