It totally depends on the girl. Mine probably cost about $200-but that was for the setting because we used my grandmother's diamond she gave me shortly before she passed away. I wanted to use it for sentimental reasons. Had we not had that, I would have wanted something like a sapphire or emerald rather than a diamond-so it's really more based on her taste.

You also might keep in mind that diamond rings are an investment.  Gold is way high in value now; I'm not sure about diamonds but usually these items appreciate over the long term.  The down side to this strategy is that you probably would not want to ever redeem it for the appreciated value because of the value of its meaning to you and your spouse.  I would not part with my wedding rings even though they have at least tripled in value over the years.

I think it really depends on your financial situation and expectations. I personally think the wedding ring is more important because it stays on the hand, in theory, forever.

I'm one that likes to keep things simple and affordable.  A beautiful ring is all that matters.  Something that fits the gal's personality.  My boyfriend (whom I refer to as my husband because we act like and old married couple already) has made comments to me about needing my hand insured when he proposes.  On the other hand I'm wondering how much should I spend on his wedding band.  I would love to pick up some gold rings from *bleep* shops and head to a custom jeweler so he can get exactly what he wants but I have no idea how much that would cost...and I'm frugal so until he proposes I'm not even going out to price check yet.

If you two love one another, the price should not matter at all....ever if you got it from a cracker jack box.

My husband knew better than to buy me an engagement ring! Instead, shortly after we were married we had wedding ring tattoos done. We designed them from the traditional Irish wedding bands. So our rings only cost us roughly $50 each (we paid for each other's!)
I don't feel that an engagement ring should be looked at as a form of insurance for the future or an investment; you're not going to sell what was once the symbol of your unconditional love just because the economy bottoms out!
