Coin Roll hunting
« on: May 18, 2013, 02:43:00 pm »
Anyone else here a coin roll hunter?

That is when you get boxes or rolls of coins at a bank and go through them for silver coins or old, valuable coins.

fun hobby and very addicting!  Some pennies can be worth a lot of money. Finding old silver dimes, quarters and half dollars is fun too!

 Wouldn't the bank go through them 1st for silver coins or old, valuable coins that would be in the rolls... Thanks for any info you might pass-along.

Never have done that but I have spread out all my pennies to look for old ones before I cash them in at the bank.  I find a few now and then.  My oldest was a 1896 penny.  And I have buffalo head nickle but it is pretty worn. How old does a penny have to be to be valuable?

I don't purposely purchase roll change to go through them but I do look through all change I receive for old coins.
Have a wonderful day!

Hey Mike, You might want to check out ebay for that. I was just looking at some coins, mostly pennies the other day they had some uncirculated coins still in rolls, some loose in bags a lot of wheat's and Indian-head pennies in bundles. It was really cool. If you are a new collector I think this a great way to get some inexpensive inventory.

Banks that get boxes in arent searched by the tellers. The rolls inside are wrapped and sealed.

Pennies are a great place to start coin roll hunting because it is cheap, only $25 for a box of 2500 coins.

The ones that are the most valuable are 1909 S VDB, 1914D, 1922D and 1931S.

I saw a 1914D penny sell for $2000 on ebay last night!

I pull out all the wheat pennies and any that are older that look brand new.  Those sell pretty quickly.

also, all 2009 nickels, dimes and quarters seem to be in shorter supply because the mint stopped their printing early because of the Crash of 2008. Try to find a 2009 dime!

I went through a box of 2500 dimes and only found 3 2009 dimes!!!

I haven't been coin roll hunting. I just check the change that i receive from shopping. I started collecting coins when they started the 50 states quarters. From there i continued with U.S territories quarters, Sacagawea dollar coins and Presidential dollars, redesigned nickels, and lincoln pennies. I've managed to get quite a few canadian coins and mexican coins as well. I found a Mercury dime on the floor at my last job in the rice plant that I worked in. Got quite a few susan b. anthony dollars and even received a kennedy half dollar as change from the corner store. My boyfriend gave me one of his Eisenhower dollar coins. I even have a couple 2 dollar bills. My collection may not be valuable but i just liked seeing the changes of money and the thrill of finding a new one to add to my collection
