haha, you know, i think you build up a tolerance to things like that. i don't get spooked by movies, books, etc. half as easily as i did when i was younger. i thoroughly enjoy things of that nature now ;p

For a real shock, stick with a couple of classics... " The lottery", and "We have always lived in the castle", by Shirley Jackson.

i've totally read 'the lottery' !
i thought it was quite good, really.
never heard of 'we have always lived in the castle' though.

If you like horror, read Off Season by Jack Ketchum........its really really creepy yet very good.

i've heard of that!
isn't it about cannabalism? and isn't it supposed to be really graphic?

I hate horror. It scares the crap out of me. I mean, that's what it's for, but I'm not one of those people who enjoys having that happen. And the closest thing I can get to suspense is perhaps mystery novels. And I don't even read them often! The only mystery author I can get into is Lillian Jackson Braun.
Anyway, no horror. Period.

i'm looking for a few good reads ^_^
i'm a huge fan of dean koontz, finishing up 'your heart belongs to me' right now. and i love the dexter series by jeff lindsay.

does anyone have any suggestions that might interest me?
please avoid stephen king titles if at all possible ;p i'm just not a fan.
.......Hi discardedheart, it seems that we are both fans of Dean Koontz.......He is awesome isn't he?.........here are some suggestions of some of his work that i think you would really love......(1) INTENSITY by Dean Koontz  (2) THE WATCHERS by Dean Koontz  (3) DARK RIVERS OF THE HEART by Dean Koontz...............................also, I know a thriller you will really enjoy, this author is not as popular as Koontz and you might have to look his work up on the net (Amazon) and the author is named "Noel Hynd" & the book is titled "Ghosts"..............trust me discardedheart, this book is a sleeper, (quietly kept quality), and you will get spooked. - hope you check it out.

Really ? You don't like Stephen King? His older stuff like Carrie, Pet Sematary etc. aren't that great. But I fell in love with his Dark Tower Series. It's so different and scary in different ways.
I like the Odd Thomas Series also.

let me tell you, mc1962! there aren't many koontz novels that i HAVEN'T read ;p ! in fact, i LOVED intensity! i found it to be somewhat similar to velocity - have you read that one? surely you have<333. i've also read the other two you mentioned ^_^ ! have you read the christopher snow books? those are my favorites of his (fear nothing & seize the night..)

i've never heard of noel hynd! since you're a koontz fan like me, though, i know you've got a taste for quality ;p hahah - i'll for sure be looking him up ;p i love anything that can spook me real good..  thanks so much for the suggestion!

i've heard so much praise for the dark tower series! the only king books i've ever been able to get into were the shining and dreamcatcher.. for some reason his stuff just doesn't have the right feel for me.

and yeah, the odd thomas series is pretty great<3.

Suspense.  James Patterson is awesome and his Alex Cross and Women's club series are the best.

actually, no, i haven't yet.
i picked up a couple of books ('the snowman's children' - it was very good, but not in the horror genre. and 'the hit' - which was praised by john grisham, but didn't fit my fancy very well.) a few weeks back and i'd been reading those. i'll probably be looking for it soon, though ^_^ and i'll be sure to post on this thread and let you know what i think of it..

alright, mc1962 :) i checked for 'ghosts' at the library the other day.. but didn't find it. i DID, however, find a book titled "a room for the dead" by noel hynd. so i went ahead and picked it up. haven't started it yet (i'm currently reading a book by joe hill titled "20th century ghosts") - but i'll most likely get started on it in the next day or two.
..have you read that one? or is 'ghosts' the only book of his that you've read? do you think i'll be able to get a good feel for his style from this one? or is he like koontz - varies things up all the time?
