This is very helpful...your body needs iron so it can make hemoglobin, a substance in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to body tissues. Brain activity, breathing, cellular respiration and every activity of the body depends on there being enough iron in the blood. When your iron levels are low you are basically starving your body and all its systems and organs of oxygen. Iron is available in two forms heme and nonheme. Heme forms of iron are found in meat and poultry and are absorbed quite easily by the body. Nonheme iron is found in vegetable and grains and is absorbed less readily. Since you do not eat meat, you'll have to go for the vegetables and grains. I have low iron also when I was younger but now im older Its just right just because I have been eating better.

If you have low iron, you might need to know that some drinks could lower iron absorption (like tea and coffee)... I heard that tea and coffee only affects non-heme iron but does not affect heme iron... Drinking coffee/tea daily shouldn't be a problem since people get more iron in their diet then needed, but it could be bad for people who need more iron in their diet...

There are drinks that increases iron absorption like OJ

I never even knew I had low iron until I went to donate blood, what a surprise. I have been taking vitamins ever since.

I usually NEED to donate blood to keep my iron from being too high.

If you consume beef with a source of vitamin C like orange juice the vitamin C will help you absorb and assimilate the iron in the beef.

If your iron is high (like mine) you can consume milk with beef and that way, you can manage, your iron intake.

Any female who has a monthly cycle probably should have their iron checked regularly.  Men and post menopausal women might not have to be quite as concerned.

Have a great day!

I've been having this problem for a while since I'm a vegetarian but it's really starting to hit me now. So I'm going to have to change up my diet some so I'm not so tired all the time. Right now I just really want to take a nap.

Iron tablets are relatively inexpensive and are sold over-the-counter.  If those do not help, you really should see your doctor as it could be indicative of a serious medical problem.
