Doctors Visit Need Some Advice
« on: April 08, 2013, 10:18:51 pm »
I went to the Doctors ( actually a nurse practitioner)and they re-did my blood work and even with medications for high cholesterol and triglycerides and they are still way to high and if I don't get them under control they are going to give me another pill to take and I already taking 21 prescriptions. So I talk to him about fish oil capsules and I am starting them on Tuesday, my nurse that comes on Tuesday and she is going to help me. My problem is that I only eat one time a day.  I don't use sugar I use sugar substitute and fasted and my blood sugar was still to high, so what else can I do so I don't turn border line diabetes to having full born diabetes?  Its hard for me to exercise so I need some idea's on what I can do that will help? I have Fibromyalgia and my legs are really weak so but on the other hand I need to exercise any idea's from my Family on Fusion Cash?

I watch Doctor Oz every day.  He, and his website, have a lot of good information on these things.

The first thing that comes to mind is garlic and oatmeal.  Both will lower cholesterol.  Olive oil is a healthy fat rich in omega 3.

I don't blame you for not wanting to take any more pills.  I prefer to use food as medicine than to take pills.

I won't touch artificial sweeteners either, just natural substitutes like Stevia, Agave Syrup or Cocopalm Sugar.

PS - When you're on the right site it has The Doctor Oz Show logo on it with clips from the show.

OP I agree with what the other poster told you, diet is so very important to controlling cholesterol and high blood pressure. I know the American Heart Association has a lot of diet info on their website, if Im not mistaken they even have recipes.
Exercise is also helpful and I know you said that you have issues with excercising, this may not work either but My H had a ruptured Achilles a few years ago and then had a Heart attack and double bypass a couple years after so some traditional exercise doesn't work for him so someone suggested swimming.
Swimming can be low impact and very healthy. I don't know if any of this helps but Good luck OP!

Its hard for me to exercise so I need some idea's on what I can do that will help? I have Fibromyalgia and my legs are really weak so but on the other hand I need to exercise any idea's from my Family on Fusion Cash?

I found myself in the same boat a number of years ago. I have very bad rheumatoid arthritis plus I was in a car accident a number of years ago that left me in a lot of pain. I was constantly hearing from my doctors how I needed to exercise, but I was so weak even the littlest thing was just beyond me.

A nurse in my doctor's office suggested I start with Tai Chi. It's very slow and totally non impact, and it's not aerobic at all so you don't need to worry about your heart rate increasing and making you more tired. But what it does is, it gets you moving and starts a slow change.

The American Arthritis Foundation offers classes just about everywhere, and you don't need to be diagnosed with arthritis to sign up. The classes are pretty reasonable. If you're interested, you can find an instructor here http://www.taichiforhealthinstitute.org/instructors/certified_instructors/?id=0&country=United+States

After I did Tai Chi for a few weeks, I started to feel that I could start walking. At first all I could do was walk to the end of the block and back, less than a quarter of a mile. But I kept walking every other day, adding a tiny little bit length wise, and then finally I was able to walk every day. I also used the track miles map over at SparkPeople.com to see exactly how far I was walking. Now, unless the weather is really bad, I walk just a little over 4 miles each day.

It didn't happen overnight, and sometimes there are still days when my joints are just in such agony I can't walk any farther than half a mile, but it definitely made a difference.

I hope this helps!

First, I would try to see a doctor, not a nurse practitioner.  I like NPs and Physician's Assistant's, but recently had a really bad experience with one.  Since you have high cholesterol and I guess you are saying you are borderline diabetic and you have neuropathy, your case is complicated and should be treated by the best doctor you can find or afford.

Eating one time a day (if I understood your correctly) could be part of the problem.  Your body needed regular small meals to produce insulin properly and in a constant, consistent manner.  Otherwise your blood sugar will drop when you have not eaten for long periods of time.  You body starts to go into a fat retaining mode because it thinks would are starving.  Then you eat and your blood sugar spikes.

If you can work with a dietician, they can give you a lot more information than I can.  They can also give you ideas on exercises you can do that will not cause you more pain.

If your insurance won't pay for some of these services, believe me, I understand.  In that case, I would get on the internet and read as much as you can about your conditions.  Make sure you read articles from places like John Hopkins or at least WebMD and not miracle cure sources that are trying to sell you something.

My mother has diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, neuropathy, and arthritis.   She gave up one day and just crawled in bed and never walked again.  We tried to tell her that she needed to keep trying, but she has now been laying in bed or in a wheelchair for nine years.  Whatever you do...keep trying!

You have to start eating more than once a day....cut out foods a little at the time...instead of fish oil try eating baked fish or eggs....no pork, no, beef....then later on wean off other meats....just keep the fish and eggs....try roasting you some veggies in the oven...like some broc, span, tomat, onio......then have you a big salad for lunch...have you some bean or peas or a leafy vegg for supper....no bread or any bread products.....nothing made with flour....and go to a nutritiouist...drink green tea with honey..no sugar or by products at all, no sodas.....you can do it....you can take control of your health and try and walk a little....3 times a week to build up some endurance....good luck...read about your conditions.....

I believe the more vegetables you eat the healthier you will become.  I view Youtube Dr. Gabriel Cousens who states he has a cure for Diabetes. He even has a book available how to cure Diabetes. I have one of his books with recipes in it. He believes eating raw food only will cure many diseases. Just view Youtube Dr. Cousens and see what you think.
I just eat more vegetables in my diet than anything else nuts, seeds, little bit of beens and some fruit also.  Raw vegetables mostly and a lot of home made soup.  I recently cut out dairy products, gluten products, soy, because of allergy to these products, no sugar, and I don't eat meat or just a taste.  Try changing what you eat and the way you eat (more small meals within the day).

My son was diagnosis ed as diabetic a few years ago and also suffers. One of the best things  he did was tailor an eating plan to your needs. He looks and feels great! His eating plan is something he enjoys.

As walking, if it is appropriate for you is great. If not water walking is great.

I know very little about it but I do know that you need to start eating several small meals a day not once a day.

you defintiely need to change your eating habits. One meal a day is NOT the way to go. Your body needs food on a regular like basis to balance its own systems out, this is especially true with the production of insulin. The body can produce the exact same amount of insulin if you eat once a day or several meals, but the difference is the 'spike' you get with eating just one meal, whereas with small meals several times a day the same insulin amount is spread evenly out so to speak, and that way your systems handle it properly.

One keep factor is diet, HOW you eat and What you eat are both important parts of the equaltion. Certain foods can really help you cope, they have been mentioned in previous posts already. Now there is one really big 'no-no' food and that is breads.

I agree with everything everyone have said.  I work everyday so I cannot tune into Dr. ZO but I have heard his show and he tells you so many things to do, so find the right one for you.

Everything I have read says that you should eat at least 3 times a day.  When you only eat 1 meal a day, you tend to overeat or to eat something that you should not eat.  If you eat 3 well-balanced meals a day with vegetables and fruits you might do a little better with controlling your high cholesterol and blood sugar.

........My problem is that I only eat one time a day...........

Eating once a day may be part of your problem.  With diabetes, controlling your blood sugar so it's relatively level is very important.  Better to eat small amounts 3-5 times a day than 1 or 2 big meals.  Obviously your portions need to be adjusted so your daily intake is in sync with your needs.

Also important to drink at least 8 glasses of water (or other liquid) every day.  Start with 2 glasses when you first get up in the morning and another glass with each little meal.  Water fills you up and makes it easier for your internal organs to function the way they should.
