Roger Ebert's Passing
« on: April 04, 2013, 06:21:48 pm »
Just learned about Roger Ebert's death a few minutes ago.  Back in 1988 a friend gave me a copy of his movie reviews (back then it was called a video home companion because videotapes were still prevalent.)  It changed my movie viewing habits and ways of choosing movies to watch forever.  I owe Mr Ebert a huge debt for that.  I will greatly miss his rational, literary approach to all the subjects he addressed, and I will miss his fine writing.

I hate this like you wouldn't believe. :'(

I know.  I used to watch Siskel and Ebert's late night show and loved the banter back and forth between them when they would disagree on movie reviews.  It was great when one was giving a movie the "thumbs up" and the other just dissed the movie so badly.  That was a great show and they made a great pair.  Almost as legendary as Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon together.

I also am saddened by his passing because I used their reviews of movies to help me decide if the movie was worth going to.  If they both gave it a thumbs down, then the movie must be really bad.  If it was a split and one liked it because it was funny or some feature in a movie I liked, I would also go see it.  And of course if they both gave it a thumbs up, then it most likely is a really good movie.  I have found that most of the critics out there are generally very negative about most movies and their reviews and criticisms clearly indicate to me
that they are critics because they really hate movies in general.  They go way to deep for me to understand their comments.  Rather than just reviewing a movie solely on whether or not
it is entertaining or not, they critic it based upon, in my opinion unreasonable criticisms.  Siskel and Ebert always gave reviews that I could understand and relate to.  When Siskel passed away, I was saddened as half of the chemistry was gone.

Eh, i liked his show but not really going to miss him that much. A lot of the movies he gave thumbs up to were boring a$$ indy/cann festival films that really weren't that great or fun to watch. Also he said video games are not art. Kind of glad the old fart is gone, he had too much influence on his personal preferences.

Roger Ebert was indeed a class act. I always liked the banter between he and Gene Siskel. :angel12: :angel12: :angel12:

Two aisle sets open.  :( I enjoyed watching his reviews and his banter with Siskel. Nothing compares in this day.

When I lived in Chicago, I frequented the movies often, and watched Siskel and Ebert's show to see which movie they thumbed up or thumbed down. Based on what they said, I went and watched the movie.  I am saddened to hear of his passing.  My sympathy to his widow and family. :angel11: :angel12: :angel11:

He had been sick for a long time.  May he now find rest and peace.
Have a wonderful day!

I have benefited greatly, especially from his written reviews.  He was probably my favorite film critic.

So sad, he and his buddy helped host into the concept of movie reviewing and critiquind so we would not waster money on bad movies or movies that were not to our tastes.
