I have recycled some metal and a couple of old cars....that paid better than I expected.  A full garbage bag of cans is about $20.  Don't know about glass bottles....never tried that.  Anyone know what kind of glass is worth money?

Here in NY, most glass beer and some wine bottles have a deposit. You have to check the label and see if your state is listed.

Yes. When we were really down and out a while ago we seriously got into recycling. It is easy to recycle in Sacramento, as the recycling place is in the Safeway parking lot. On a good day we made $42+. Cans bring in more than plastic and glass bottles, but every bit helps!

So this is definitely easier in some states than others (I know Hawaii, Maine, and Oregon) offer some of the best deposit refunds for cans and bottles.

Any of you ever done this before? I'm considering taking this on as yet another side-money-making endeavor. (Just bummed I don't really have a good space to store a bunch of cans in my tiny apartment...maybe I'll just throw em in the laundry room :p)

I was seriously considering going and stealing all the cans from my campus's recycling bins (even though this screams ILLEGAL at me). I recently saw some cleaning staff COMBINING THE TRASH AND RECYCLABLES IN THE SAME BIN, which left me very weary about recycling in those bins. Figure everyone would be better off if I went and got them recycled myself :cat:

I save all my cans and sell them for extra cash. Like surveys this takes time be it is a good way to earn extra money next to what I am doing online. Recycling is the best thing we can to help keep trash out of landfills and protect the environment. Maybe you could suggest to your school that they place recycling bins around campus for cans, paper, and plastic and glass bottles.

I save my tin cans and remove the labels as it pays better if the labels are removed.  I also save aluminum cans but my local recycling company doesn't pay for glass.

I never tried to make money by recycling, because it seem to be too much work.

I think it really depends on what city you live in. I know where I live only cans are accepted for cash but hey it's still something!

I'm not expecting to make a fortune off this, but after hearing all of your stories I think it's definitely something I'm gonna give a try, and hopefully keep doing for a few years! I'd feel a lot a better about my recycling attempts knowing stuff is ACTUALLY getting recycled, and any $$ would be a perk  ;D

You might be surprised at how easy it would be if you asked your cleaners if you could have the cans they would probably give them to you. When the city picks up recyclables they have the cans the glass and the plastic together and separate it when they take it to the center. If they say no, buy a large trash can and put a sign on it and say cans only and put in the hall where your dorm room is and get your fellow students support. I really think they will give them to you but don't jeopardize your education by taking them ask first. :angel11:

hehe thats a good point. I do live in an apartment, so dont have access to dorm recycling (that would have been so convenient), but maybe I can sort something out with the cleaning staff.

Feel like they might even appreciate me taking some of the work off their hands  :)

I recycle everything.  In California they make it convenient.  Cans, plastic water bottles, plastic milk bottles, newspapers, cardboard.  You make more on the plastics if you sort them but the plastic type.  I noticed one guys said it is to much work, we click for pennies so sorting through the recyclables is nothing.  We make about 25.00 a month.

We keep our aluminum cans separate from the rest of the recycles and I take them down to cash them out whenever the box gets full.  It is just pocket change, but it makes me feel good.  l could put the aluminum in with the rest of the recycles, but I get a treat with the change.

Our town has an awesome recycling system.. Curbside pickup every other Friday morning.

Yes, we recycle as much as we can. Last week we went to the recycle center and made $52 off of all of our cans and plastic bottles. Before we go we always check the pennysaver because the center gives out weekly coupons.

The only thing I turn in for cash is soda cans.  It's nice to get that little bit of money, though.

I don't think we have any resell programs in the area, but my aunt sells cans.
Opinion: 1) a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter 2) belief stronger than impression and less strong than positive knowledge
