HR Block will review your previous year but to do it I think they probably expect you to have them complete your current year.

I could have sworn I saw an ad where H&R Block will review your 2012 taxes and make sure you got the most money.  Now if they find you more money, I am sure  they want you to pay them to file them with the larger refund which might be worth it.  What you might do is go to your state income tax website.  For example, I went to the State of South Carolina income tax site and found a list of online tax programs that were offering FREE online filing for federal AND state.  I think you income had to be under about $60,000 in order to qualify.  If you income was over, you can still file federal for free and pay a pretty small free for state, like $30 or less. 

What I would do is prepare them online yourself but don't e file them.  Print them out and take them to H&R Block after calling your local office to verify that they will review them for free.  If they find more deductions for a larger refund, let them file for you.  If not, go back home and finish the e file yourself at no cost or very little cost to you.

Yeah you can go to almost any tax place and have your taxes reviewed. Call first.

There is always a catch nowadays for everything! I would check very closely at that deal because nobody gives out anything free!! I would probably say that they do want you to make some type of contract with them. The last customer that said that they expect you to have them do your current years taxes with them would probably be right. I would check the fine print on this, there are what I call "creative marketing" these days and there seems to always be a gimmick to these so called "free" things.

I believe the catch is in what they consider to be a review.  Anybody who has ever prepared tax returns for a living knows that the only way to truly review someone else's tax return is to actually prepare it yourself. No one is going to do that for free, especially when it is hard enough to keep up with the tax returns from actual paying customers. A quick glance over your return for a few common mistakes isn't a review.

What do you mean reviewed..like for errors or something? Not likely a CPA or other tax professional would do that for free.

Well honestly, it doesn't take but a few minutes to do them.  Even when you have deductions like for property taxes and mortgage interest.  I did my own and four other people's and I am no accountant.  All you do is plug in the info it asks you for.  I am sure if you have a small business or something like that they aren't going to  review them for free, but if it is a normal personal return I believe they will review it for free in hopes of finding errors and turning you into a customer.

Competition is tough.  People are doing things for free in order to try to get customers.  Look at Progressive insurance that gives you their rates and the rates of their competitors.  Why would they do that for free?  In hopes of gaining your trust and turning you into a customer.

Seems unlikely, but I vaguely recall an advertisement on TV for a company that reviews your taxes with no charge. I do mine online.

I also thought I seen a TV ad for H&R that they would check you taxes, but I don't know if for free or they expect to do your current taxes. I would call places first. Be careful though my daughter did her income taxes with H&R and when I reviewed them I told her they didn't give her the credit for going to school. She went back and they had to amend her incometaxes, another friend also had problems with them another Amendment.

Those would be some very basic tax returns, which I wouldn't consider to be typical nor the type of situation that a review would likely to lead to a higher refund. They'd basically be checking if you input everything correctly, which the IRS already does for you. During the time of year in which 70-80 hour weeks are common place, if HR Block has the time to double check inputs for free, then they really need to consider a new business model.
