why is an egg a symbol for Easter? I thought it was to celebrate the resurrection of Christ!

It is, but I'm not sure how the eggs fit into the picture either lol. Ol well, kids enjoy hiding and finding them. It's something to bond over during Easter time as well.  :notworthy:

It is pagan and meant to mean fertility because rabbits are very fertile and lay alot of eggs. Easter is a pagan holiday, the resurrection of Christ is something completely different but we celebrate it on Easter now.

Thanks for the 411. I do appreciate the clarity of explaining that to me.

It is pagan and meant to mean fertility because rabbits are very fertile and lay alot of eggs. Easter is a pagan holiday, the resurrection of Christ is something completely different but we celebrate it on Easter now.

Rabbits do not lay eggs, sweetie.  Rabbits are mammals and bear live young.

To make it more clear, here is a better explanation.

The term Easter comes from the name of a Goddess.  Her name was Eostre.  Many churches have attempted to deny this in one or the other, but to no avail.  As the Brits say, "The truth will out..."

Now, early Pagans did not celebrate "Easter".  They celebrated the rite of Spring, which typically took place at the Spring Equinox or on the full moon following the Spring Equinox.  Eggs were abundant in spring (birds, snakes, etc.), and were chosen because they were a symbol of fertility.  Rabbits were chosen as symbols, too, because they are highly fecund.

When the Church, wanting to win over converts, rather than kill them, decided to merge the resurrection of Christ with the Pagan celebrations, it kept ALL of their symbolism.

Even the date of the Christian Easter is pagan.  It is ALWAYS the first Sunday after the First Full Moon after the Spring Equinox.

Eggs, chocolate, even the word Easter, have absolutely nothing to do with the Resurrection of Christ.  Most Christian Holidays are mergers of Pagan ones.  Yes, even Christmas.  (A tree in the house?  How pagan can one get, especially when the Bible expressly forbids having a tree in the home.)

I am not saying any of this to upset anyone.  But to give some light on the subject.
