Tips on Going Green and Save/Make Money
« on: May 12, 2009, 01:53:33 pm »
First, I am not a tree hugging Liberal type like most of my friends I just like making some extra cash. There are many ways to be eco-friendly and save some green that do not interfere with your daily routine. I have three that I like to share that make/save me about $30 to $40 dollars a month, that could be $480 a year.
1. Get rid of those 1950's era light bulbs and invest in modern fluorescent light bulbs. Yes, they do cost more, but I have not changed a light bulb in 18 months and they use less electricity. Unplug that stuff! Unplug TVs, cell phone chargers and computers. Anything that you can turn off you can unplug from the wall just as easy. Most all electronic devices pull a little electricity even turned off.
2. Recycling doesn’t just keep waste out of landfills; it can be another source of income. I never buy glass bottled anything. Everything I buy to drink is in aluminium cans (except milk and water). I serve drinks in glass or plastic cups, that I clean and reuse, when serving drinks to my friends and party guests. I have even been know to take a bag to parties and collect cans. Once a month I take these cans to the recycling center and they give me cash. Why give your money to the city with weekly trash and recycling collection; turn those cans in yourself.
3. Collect rain water. I like my cool plants. Most people have plants and waste alot of money to keep them looking good. Rain water has large amounts of that magic ingredient plants love, nitrogen. Most well water and city water has very little nitrogen unless you got some strange runoff going on. Use rain water on your plants, it keeps them healthy and saves money on replacing them and buying those store bought fertilizers.

Plant 100 trees - it takes about 100 trees to replace the oxygen you use and the trees can use your carbon. i like maple or oak - the maple for sugar and the oak for acorn flour (yes, you can grind up acorns into a flour and eat it - why do you think that pigs that eat acorns get fat)
