I think it should be your personal preference; no matter what people say. ;)

Is there any way you could do a version of the prior pets name?  My sister had a cat she named Pete (after her husband) then when she got a new cat that looked like her prior cat she named him "repeat" but it was spelled repete.  Thought it was clever anyway.  Do what you feel comfortable with.

Name your dog anything you want but You can also add junior or the second just for fun.  My husband came up with the weirdest name for our dog (youmugs) from a commercial for flea medicine.  It took me a while to get used but i love it now.  I get many reactions most confused from people when I tell them my dog's name.

I wouldn't name a new member to the family the same as another recently lost.  Each has it's own individuality and personality and that is even in a name.  I had 3 cocker spaniels at one time.  Sisters Thunder and Lightening and one year later came there brother (From the same mother) Storm.  All 3 had were the same color had similar markings but were so different.  I often see cocker's these days and can relate to them by comparing and saying ie: Oh look that one reminds me of my Lightening girl or ha...he's got an elvis lip like my Stormin Norman had. Your relationship with your new pup will take on it's own uniqueness as should it's name.  Just my opinion.

First off, So sorry to hear about your loss..  :'(
But if it was me, I wouldn't name it the same. I'd name it something different. May your dog rest in peace. And wish you all the best with name hunting and getting your new dog.  :)

It is all up to you. I lost a dog after 13 years and couldnt get myself to get another one. I probably would have named the next dog the same.

I'm sorry to hear you lost your pet.....when my mom passed away some years back, there was a white lab that showed up at my house....it was a boy dog...he was so friendly with me and my children, but I didn't want him.....I was trying to find the owner or a way to get rid of him.....my cousin came by one day and asked me where I got the dog and I told her the story and asked her if she wanted him...and she told me the story about a movie called White Dog.....so I kept him and named him Alvin, my moms real name....she called herself Alma because she said she didn't know why my grannie named her a boys name....one night I let the dogs out, and about five minutes later I heard a gun shot so I went out to look for my dogs, Junie ran in the house past me and I started to call Alvin, he came limping in the yard...he was shot in the shoulder, I let him in the house, and said I will see if you my spirit dog......he made it...we moved a few months later....about 6 months after we moved.....he just up and left and I have never seen him again...I looked all over but could never find him.....now I'm crying........

I forgot to answer you question about naming your dog....I think it's up to you....you know he can't replace the one lost...he's his own dog....keep him for a few days or weeks and see what name fits him....you may see him as a totally different name....good luck with your new pooch.....

Would that be like naming two children the same name?  A completly different name for the different personality makes more sense to me

You can do what you want, but just remember, even if they are the same breed, even if they look the same, they will not be the same.  Each animal has it's on personality.  I have 6 dogs, 3 sets of the same breed, and one of my sets are from the same litter, but are not the same in wants/likes/personality.  I would not name him/her the same name, if you want something close that's ok, but the same, no it's NOT the same dog.  So sorry for your loss.  :( :(

:-  I will be making a big decission on a name in 2 weeks for my new dog. I want to name it after the one that just passed away. Is it right for me to name the dog after my deceased dog? I  will be getting the same breed dog and looks just like the deceased. would like some opinions asap.
what ever that name is just put Junior or the second after the name.

I think if you want to name your dog after your other dog is ok.  I got another Lab after the one I had for 15 years died and I named him duos (which mean two) but I still used to call him midnight because he looked so much like him and we had him for so long....still miss him :sad1:
