Am I right or wrong to do this... need help asap
« on: February 23, 2013, 05:26:26 pm »
:-  I will be making a big decission on a name in 2 weeks for my new dog. I want to name it after the one that just passed away. Is it right for me to name the dog after my deceased dog? I  will be getting the same breed dog and looks just like the deceased. would like some opinions asap.

hmm. Well, thats a tough one. Personally I wouldn't do it, but then again I may get a dog that looked similar to my old pet. But, probably would name it something different..
pets passing is so sad.

yes it is very hard especially in the winter. She was my snow buddy! she loved the snow. she would climb to the top of a high snowbank and slid down on her back or stomach. I even have VIDEOS of her doing this.. OH how I DO miss her!! Thank you for your response and will forward for more from others.  RIP my girl. :(

It is not wrong, it is just your personal preference. I think you might be disappointed if you give the new dog the same name, and she doesn't live up to the expectations you have for her. they all have different personalities, and while I'm sure you'll love the new one, she won't be the same. And if you give her the same name, you'll always be reminded of how different she really is.

Thank you also.. I guess I have a lot of thinking to do. she passed away in 2010 and it still seems like yesterday. She was in a dog fight against a lot bigger dog. :(

Well being a huge animal lover, kudos to you for opening up your heart to another animal, its hard sometimes after a loss like that.  I would say maybe get the dog, have it a couple days, watch the personality, traits, and maybe try to find a name that suits the personality.  I just think that giving the dog the same name, is "expecting" to much of the new dog before even getting it.  Have fond memories of your past dog, but create new ones, including a new name, with this new puppy!!  Good luck!!

That's a tough one...I have thought many times about my beloved white cat I had to have put down several yrs. back and have always wanted to get another white long haired and have thought about naming it the same name...I have 3 other cats that I love dearly too...I think honestly we need to let go and remember we are taking in a new addition to our family, therefore, needing a new name as well...we never forget our previous pets but at the end of the day i think new addition...new name  :)

I is sweet how much you loved your dog that passed away, but I would name the dog jr or the name of the deceased dog plus jr or say the II.  This way you will always have a unique story behind the new dog's name.  I will do this for my pets.

I think it will be hard on you and anyone who knew the first dog if you call it the same name.   I had a dog that died when I was a teenager - he was a black lab named Sarge that we had for a very long time.  When he died, we were going to wait a bit to get a new dog because we thought we needed time to grieve.   My other dog however was so sad and lonely, that he spent hours every day laying on sarge's grave.  We got a new dog rather quickly and named him on paper "Sarge's Shadow" since we thought we would always be comparing him to the first dog.  He was a great dog too, and we had him for many years until he died of old age, but we never called him sarge.  From the day he came home, we called him shadow.  Both dogs were great pets who we had for many years.  I think it would have been hard to call Shadow Sarge since they were so different from each other.  It would have been sad to use the first dogs name and have a different dog come running.  It didn't take any time at all to bond with Shadow and for him to steal our hearts, but he was a completely different dog with his own personality.  He deserved his own name and his own relationship with us.

It is your dog, so name him whatever you want to!  Even if it is the same name.  Maybe you could call him a slight variation, if you don't want people to think he is the same dog, but ultimately, you choose a name that you love and makes you happy and you will be great!

I know very well how painful it is to lose a beloved pet.  I don't think I would name a dog the same as one that passed away because in my little pea brain it would cause confusion when I had memories of the dog that had passed away.  Personally, I think it is better to have a brand new beginning and always remember the other dog for his individuality, but I really think you should do exactly what makes you feel the best.  Don't have any guilt or remorse, the pain of losing your friend is punishment enough.  I know.  Hugs to you.

You have the right to name your dog what ever you want, but personally I wouldnt do that. I dont think it's unfair to that new dog or to yourself. You need to grieve to loss of the dog that passed and build a relationship with new dog. It might be difficult if you are reminded of the deceased dog everyday while calling the new dog by the old dog's name. Be fair to the new dog and give him/her a new name is my advice and good luck.

i think you can name your dog any name you like and it doesnt matter what others say about it. The only problem would be if you had young children and dont understand. So do what you want and name the dog the same name.

I wouldn't give it the same name but if that's what you want go ahead.
