my spin on "Gangnam Style" by Psy
« on: February 08, 2013, 01:25:56 pm »
lately, I have been watching the Ghana Black Stars football team and I thought of the song "Gangnam Style" by Psy and decided to put my spin on it. my spin is "Ghana Black Stars Style"
here it goes:
Ghanaian kids singing "Gangnam Style"
music stops and I come forth: "no, not Gangnam Style, but Ghana Black Stars Style."
here is some of what I have cooked up

Azonto Dance-Asamoah celebrating his win
Azonto Dance-Asamoah got a big grin
Azonto Dance, do the Azonto Dance

sitting down now watching the Black Stars on BBC on BBC
sitting down now watching the Black Stars on BBC on BBC
come on now Ghana get the goal goal goal goal

Ghana Black Stars Style  Jet Jet Jet Jet  Black Stars Style Jet Jet Jet Jet
heeeeeeey Asamoah Jet Jet Jet Jet heeeeeeeeey Asamoah (Asamoah's nickname is Baby Jet)

am going to have to get with some Ghanaian or Nigerian singers and collaborate some more

I've actually made a few parodies of my own (although I haven't made any for Psy's song). Usually there's a phrase or a verse that just sticks out for me where I know exactly a perfect parody for that part of the song. And then from there, I begin building the rest of the parody around that idea or theme. For example, the first time I heard Five for Fighting's "Superman (It's Not Easy To Be Me)", for the refrain, I could just hear Kermit the Frog singing "It's not easy / To be / Green..." With that in mind, I built up the rest of the verses all centered around Kermit and the misconceptions people have about him -- about why it's not easy to be green. And eventually I came up with a parody that people love to hear me sing at karaoke every once in a while (ok, maybe they just like how I change my voice to sound like Kermit too).

If you're up for it (or you keep coming up with other parodies), there's this great website that allows members to post their own parodies, misheard lyrics, and other fun music-related stuff (http://www.amiright.com/). And others can then go and rate your parody based on humor, timing, and overall enjoyment.

I think it's fun to create these parodies. Hope you continue with the great work!

I think Gangnam Style is a great way to dance and lose some weight. It is a kind of Zumba with no hand sticks.

I think Gangnam Style is a great way to dance and lose some weight. It is a kind of Zumba with no hand sticks.

in Cote d' Ivoire, there is a dance troupe called AANINKA and they dance to many top 40 hits, one of them being "Gangnam Style". I never counted how many are in the
troupe, but they are very good. there is another guy from Nigeria named JJC who has a song called "African Skank". Skank is a collective term for African dances across the nation
JJC means Johnny Just Came, which is pidgin English for a Naija man returning back to Nigeria. during the song he "goes" to Ghana, and then Kenya and then South Africa
and he is naming some of the dances there, such as the Azonto, Etigi, Massai, Shimalda, Shimaldi, Hlokoza. it is a very high energy song. if you listen closely, it almost sounds
like a Naija version of "Cha Cha Slide Part 2" by DJ Casper with a dash of "Hip Hop Hooray" thrown in. some other "Gangnam" parody artists are Zigi "Azonto Ghana Style", Al'ova
"Azonto vs. Gangnam Style" both from Ghana, Al'ova paying tribute to Psy in his song "Psy, its Al'ova", and Kasaskie, James Mazive and Illah Flesh from Nigeria with "Naija London Style"
here are the following to look up on Youtube:
AANINKA "Gangnam Style"
Zigi         "Azonto Ghana Style"
Al'ova      "Azonto vs. Gangnam Style"
Kasaskie, James Mazive, and Illah Flesh "Naija London Style"
JJC          "African Skank"

hey, out of curiosity, are you from Ghana? on FB, some of the younger guys that I am friends with
over there in Ghana say "big ups" on their posts. I know some missionaries over there in Accra. a
majority of the people I am friends with in Ghana on FB are in Koforidua. the city of Koforidua got its name
from a man named Kofi Odori that built a hut under a huge mahogany tree. farmers would go to the hut to
rest. it is pronounced Koforeedia. it is a shortened version of "Kofi Odori's tree. dua (pronounced "dia" in Akan)
means "tree".
