Corporal punishment or timeout?

I agree with both.  It depends on the situation.  As the bible says Spare the rod send the child to hell.

For some children, timeouts have absolutely no effect. There are indeed times where corporal punishment is necessary. For my daughter, I use timeouts because they are effective most of the time. However, there are times where she is in such a rage (Terrible Two's) that a small swat on the rear and replacement into timeout is necessary. I don't use corporal punishment by itself.

both - use what works. you don't have to resort directly to CP if the timeout works.
My kids started school in the south and they used CP. moving back here to NY... they call it child abuse. but, the kids at the schools in MS &OK - showed much respect for authority, i was so impressed! 
they spanked when i went to school. i only knew of one kid who was spanked - that was enough for all of us to tow the line! We didn't want what that kid got!

It depends on the crime...I believe in in corporal punishment for the right reasons. If you kill someone then what gives you the right to continue your life?
