It depends on what you need this computer for. Thrift stores often have computers, and sometimes you can find great deals on the internet. One of the best ways to save money on a computer is building it yourself too.

we got a dell with windows 7 a year and a half ago at bestbuy for 400.00 wasn't great but not to bad we used the same keyboard and screen  think dells are not the top of the line but are considered a good pc.

Have you checked your local newspaper? We have some really good bargains (2nd hand) going in our paper. Laptops (loaded with Windows, Office, Wifi) going for about $100 with DVD writer included. Good luck in your search!!

  CraigsList; I got both my laptop & desktop there, under a $100... Lots computer-heads there who clean them up (by that I don't mean on the outside only) and resell... Best Of Luck.

Ebay is the place to go. If you are bidding on it then you have a great chance of getting a good deal. Even if you choose buy it now you can still get a good deal. And if something happens you are covered by paypal but inly if you use paypal to pay for the computer.

amazon.com, Walmart, Best Buy, Craigslist...all have pretty good prices. My hubby is a tattoo artist and we have gotten all of our computers and tv's through trades. Game systems too and snow boards too.

Depending on what you are trying to get, you can generally find a few good deals around.  Check TigerDirect.com.  We got a computer for my mom a few years ago and I think it was around $400 at that time.  Or, if you want a desktop and don't mind a little work, you could always build one yourself.

Think about what you are using the computer for before buying anything.  If it's just for documents or email, then you don't need a high CPU or graphics card and can deal with minimal Ram, though a large hard drive might be worth a bit more.  If you are traveling with it, consider a SSD hard drive since it's less likely to break if dropped, but it will be more expensive.  If you are using it for gaming, a strong graphics card is a must.

It's pretty easy to build your own pc. Just get a barebones kit. or buy the parts seperate.

I'd recommend going with new over used even if it's a little more expensive.  Walmart has some cheaper new ones, as does BJs (not sure if you're a member there or not though).

There's so many places to look for PCs, depending on what kind of PC you want. Online you could use craigslist, ebay (stay away from the ones they say "for parts and repair"), amazon, auction sites, etc. Physical stores like electronics stores (look for refurbished or re-certified ones), thrifty stores or even yard sales.

The main advice would be to look for a used, good PC, relatively current, and a good brand if possible, from let's say a few years back. Do not fall for dinosaurs either.
A mid to high end PC from a few years back, it's a low end today. That same PC, may be found cheap, and there's a good chance it will serve your purpose and will last you long. A cheap PC, no brand, or even a low end PC from a relatively good brand has a chance to fail because it was envisioned and made to be sold cheap, with cheap components. Usually it isn't the brand what makes a good PC, but what's inside. Without being tech savvy, it's hard for the average person to tell what's good and what's not, for example, emachines has a reputation for using junky power supplies.
