Do they call school off too easy??
« on: January 24, 2013, 06:51:42 pm »
We are expecting some snow sometime tomorrow and at 6 pm they had already called school off! I don't want my children to be in danger on the bus if the roads get bad but I still think they should have at least waited til morning.

I think they do where I live... yeah, I understand that where I live is in a valley and we have mountains, but if theres even a 30% chance of snow, school will be cancelled. We're supposed to get an ice storm overnight, and they have school cancelled for tomorrow. Spring is coming, and that means tornado season is approaching. During the whole 4 month window, if theres even the smallest CHANCE of a storm, school will be cancelled and the town will shut down in case of possible tornadoes. More often than not, there's a little rumbling from thunder, the lightning, lots of wind and rain, and thats it. Schools cancelled for nothing more than a standard spring storm. It drives me crazy!

I think nowadays they cancel school because some people would probably sue the school if their child was hurt in any way, or the bus company!  What a shame that this country has gone this route.

Home schooling is the solution to this problem. Let them do some homework at home!

I think in some cases yes and in some cases no. As far as the original post, now yes I think that was a bit hasty and silly on the school system's part. But I also know here in southern NC when it starts snowing, raining (precipitation of any kind lol) people kinda loose their minds as far as driving goes. So I guess in short: it's iffy lol

I totally think that they call school off too easy!  My son has missed two days of middle school due to frozen water pipes.  This has been an ongoing problem.  If the pipes are a problem...fix them! I live in Colorado and you would think that snow was a way of life here?  People freak at the sign of an inch of snow!  Probably because it has a chance of turning into six feet of snow like it did eight years ago...within about seven heavy snow-fall hours.  It was great!  The only way out of our neighborhood was a path that people had trampled to the local liquor store and tavern. People were riding their snow mobiles in the streets and helping each other out!

I believe they do call school off to earl because most of them don't think right and they think they are going to get snow so they call it off :binkybaby:

I grew up in the Northeast, next to a snow belt.  My cousins lived in another snow belt.  Snow didn't keep us from school unless it buried us in the early morning or got very icy.  It had to be pretty bad to cancel school.  The bus might have been late but we still went.

Now I live in the Southwest.  We get a dusting of snow and people don't know what to do.  Back in December we got dusted, during the night, I woke to use the bathroom and heard someone spinning their tires so I looked out and saw only a partial dusting.  It was gone by the time I got up.  The last storm hit north of my town, in Albuquerque.  They had many closures and delays.

I have noticed that it doesn't take that much for them to close or delay school.  My concern is not the weather conditions but the drivers who don't know how to drive in it.  I guess if I had kids I'd appreciate them being delayed until all the bad drivers were at work or the snow started melting.

That doesn't keep me from thinking the drivers here are silly when it comes to snow.  :dontknow:

Take it from someone who drives a school bus NO NO and NO. Some of those back roads can and do get bad.

I think that it is better safe than sorry.   When they call school off the night before, people have enough time to make arrangements for the following day.   They do the same thing in Florida during hurricane season, and I know I'd rather have my son home for nothing than trapped at the school if the storm does become bad.   I'd rather him have 10 free days off than even one second of wondering if it was his bus that was on the news because they didn't cancel school and it crashed killing everyone on board.

Yes, the public school where I live has so many days off.  I am so glad my kids go to schools out of my district.

I think we have so few snow days in Maryland that why take the risk of the buses going out and getting in accidents or something. Let the kids stay home and play in the snow for the day. Now if it's in a place that snows all the time, I would assume the bus drivers and people in general would be used to driving with ice and snow. I'm from Wisconsin, so I can handle it, but I can't say the same for other people on the roads.

While I understand your concerns, precautions are being taken in the event that it does snow.  I would rather have my child at home than on the roads where,  if it does snow,  it could be an accident.  Maybe they didn't want to wait.
