I agree with the premise that I'd go there as a last resource, and it is absolutely just a survival instinct. If earth was like in a post apocalyptic state, so contaminated and polluted that staying here and breathing toxic air would be as bad if not more, than Mars, and there isn't no other way around, then I would really consider the expedition. I'd have to say that I'm the adventurous and explorer type, and those condition should meet before I'd attempt something like that.

Probably not, but since earth is falling apart, we probably will HAVE to go to mars in 100 or so years from now.

No, I don't think I will be changing planets, I don't even have a passport to leave the country

Remember folks, Las Vegas use to be a barren desert. Now it is a vast utopia for the most part. I'd move to mars for first dibs but i sure wouldn't want to do the early colonizing.

NO Thanks, I like it just fine here! I don't think of going to any other planet, expecially mars. It would take almost a year, as space travel goes right now to get resupplied. I don't think you could grow enough to self sustain yourself and other people that would have to be there with you!!

(Josh Peterson) Want to travel to Mars? You’re in luck: An international Netherlands-based non-profit organization is currently recruiting astronauts to staff its 2023 Mars colony mission.

The company, Mars One, announced on Tuesday its astronaut selection criteria, of which mental resilience and a strong sense of purpose are considered important traits. Mars One’s goal is to establish the first human settlement on Mars in 2023.

In the first half of 2013, Mars One will begin its global search for the best candidates for the mission. Six teams of four will be chosen from the influx of candidates, and each of which will undergo 8 years of training needed to travel to and live on Mars.

In 2016, the first supply mission will be sent to Mars to stock the planet near where the colony outpost is expected to be; in 2018; the first robotic rover will be sent to Mars to scout an ideal location for the colony. By 2021, all of the components to construct the colony will have reached Mars. After the first team arrives in 2023, the second team will have arrived in 2025.

No way jose i intend to keep my feet right here on earth. We need to cleanup our country and get back on the right track here. What a mess it is in right now. Why go somewhere and mess it up too,

I don't think that it would be better there. Earth seems to be the right place for me, until my last breath!

Has anyone see the Twilight show that showed Aliens coming to earth, turning our deserts etc into productive land, and they were so kind and wonderfull. We decided to visit their planet, and of course their planet was a Utopia. Every one that went wrote back home they were not coming back to earth, that they should join them in this Utopia type planet?

It's sad that we've let our planet get in such a state that we consider colonizing other planets (I know it's not necessary now, but some scientists make it sound inevitable.)

I think going up to Mars and being among the first to experience life on the planet would be cool in theory, but not in practice! I'll take my chances here unless the Earth is somehow uninhabitable.

As my situation stands right now, I definitely wouldn't go. No way I could leave behind my cats and horse. I would be willing to visit another planet if possible though.

As for colonizing other planets, trying to colonize a "local" planet like Mars is only useful as an experiment (as far a survival goes. The scientific gains are another matter entirely). Regardless of any doomsday predictions made, one day the Earth will cease to exist whether we're here or not. Either entropy will destroy the universe or our sun will die (explode) and this whole little galaxy we know an love will be gone. But for that range anywhere from the tens of thousands of years to billions of years in the future. I think we've got time to figure it out.
