Buy more hand soap. Maybe the media made a deal with the soap industry! Just my thought.
And yes just like everything listed above it has been around alot longer than when you first heard of it.
I bealive it has to do with how well you take care of yourself also. Inside and out.

It is something to get concerned with -.-  This "just a virus" (the regular flu) kills over 500,000 people every year.  In the US alone, it hospitalizes 200,000 people per year.  The Swine Flu killed an estimated 25 to 80 million people worldwide in 1918.  New strains of the flu do arise often, and it's pretty damn clear if you look at history that it always has the potential to wipe out huge numbers of people.  Different strains of the flu have wiped out entire civilizations.  Granted we're much more knowledgeable now, but we're by no means in control of the virus...it has the control and has the ability (and likelihood) of mutating into something we don't have treatment for.

Either way, it doesn't help to have thousands to millions of people at home sick or staying home to avoid the illness, businesses closing, schools closing, etc. during these economic times.  The last thing we need right now is a pandemic, and that's precisely what we're getting.  The 1918 flu outbreak, for instance, 30% of US workers had contracted the virus.  A 30% sickness rate over three weeks would decrease the overall GDP by 5% (according to Wiki)...and that's a big deal.  And that's just in the US, where we have a fairly structured country and access to advanced medicine.  This could potentially land us with millions to billions of indirect costs.  Especially in hospital costs.  Then you bring up the point that there are millions of people in the US without access to affordable health care.  What happens to them?

This isn't just some minor inconvenience.  It has the potential, if not handled properly, to blow up directly in our faces and cause a hell of a lot more damage than it already is.

yes different strains come and some are worse than others, the truth is though, this swine flu has less of a death rate than the "normal" flu, its just easier to catch which is defintely a cause for concern if you are a toddler or senior citizen or other immune system problems... basically if you worry about catching the flu, you have a higher chance of getting it this time.. but the good news is its less deadly...  As for 1918 you are right it was bad, but your also right when you say things have changed much. Also this looks nothing like that incident, the most recent scare tactic of the swine flu was in the seventies.. and if you look into it, the truth is more people got sick and died from the "vaccine" that was a complete botch, than the actual flu... only a handful died at all... This is much more similar to the instance we are seeing now, its also swine flu, and its not that bad... One of the cast of Harry Potter even had the swine flu haha, he said it was not different than any other flu he had... So really the big scare is over how easy it is to catch? Thats not a good reason to do things like they suggest as forcing vaccines (potentially deadly to some), or getting the puiblic all panicked.. If it appears it can be handled, the truth is most that die from the flu each year are also due to not being treated properly, staying home, thinking they can work it out etc. and end up with pneumonia, this is unlikely for anyone in decent health, only young vulnerable toddlers and seniors with immune and lung problems really should be most concerned. Very much blown out of proportion.

The biggest thing people need to do is stay healthy and get plenty of vitamins, nutrients and whatever is needed to boost their immune system, then try not to be exposed or expose others. That's about all you can do, no need to get all scared about it haha.

I think the point of that was that even though there have been deaths, this too will fade away

With or without causing destruction worldwide?  There are still a great number of scientists who say this strain of the swine flu isn't "finished," and perhaps hasn't even met its highest "gear."  There are also a good number concerned about mutation of the strain and not having a vaccine ready in time.  Time will only tell.  Frankly, I'd rather there be precaution, perhaps even a small degree of hysteria, rather than this attitude that humans cannot be touched and things will simply avoid us because we're special.

I'm not saying that human's can be touched.  But the hysteria and news will fade away.  Africa has been facing an AIDS pamdemic for the longest time now.  But when was the last time you heard about that? SARS killed over 500 people, yet that isn't news anymore either.  I'm just saying that it's a flash in the pan thing, the regular flu kills thousands of people a year, yet all we hear about is go get your flu shot.  It's scarey, yes. But will turn into something we just live with.

my sons frinds dad got the swine flu,, he is in his late 30s and healthy other than the fact that he smokes, anyways he almost died and he was in a coma for almost a month, he got over it and is back home now ,, its just scary because it hit close to home, and was that devastating to a person who has no real health issues.

There are sooo many virus's that kill people every day, I lost track.  It's good to have good hygiene, but worrying about it won't stop you from getting it.  The government was probably testing the old strand, and this new one got out.....lol....or maybe it's just mother nature doing her thing!  The earth is over populated.

I worry about it, but I don't spend my waking nights thinking about it.  Nobody can predict the day that they're gonna die.  Heck, nobody thought Michael Jackson would die from a heart-attack at 50 years old.  If you're gonna go, what choice do you have?  Just make sure your life is right with God (believing that he died for your sins) before you go.  Heaven has to be a whole heckuva lot better than this place we live in now.

Quote from http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Politics/story?id=8199396&page=1:

"The decision about vaccine priorities comes as a new study released this morning reveals that six pregnant women with swine flu died between April 15 and June 16 -- accounting for 13 percent of the total 45 U.S. deaths reported to the CDC.

All of them were healthy until they came down with the virus and developed pneumonia, according to the study based on CDC data. Not one of them received an antiviral to help them get better.

The study, published in the Aug. 8 issue of the British medical journal Lancet, indicates that pregnant women have been hospitalized more often, and have faced a higher risk of death, than other populations while battling the swine flu. "

This is the part that has me scared.  I'm also do not spend every waking hour thinking about it, but I'm 24 weeks pregnant with a 2 year old son and this can terrify me.  In fact, I didn't give it much thought either until I found out a church about an hour from my home has been infected with it.  About 4 families have all tested positive so they are cancelling services because of it.  It is something to worry about.  Yes, it may fade, but if it were your mom, dad, sister, wife, pregnant family member... who was infected, I think you would all be concerned too.  It's scary and life-threatening... and even though the common flu causes deaths too we currently have a vaccine... they're talking like there may not be enough for everyone who should have it with this.  I agree we should be doing all the things we've always been taught, but I also believe that the most cautious of people can still get sick.

Does anyone even REMEMBER the West Nile Virus of 2003 or 2004? Because I hardly do. Same goes for SARS and the bird flu. And eventually, swine flu will be the same. Just give it time, and in the meantime, wash your hands.

=/ Just because they didn't hit your neighborhood doesn't mean they didn't cause plenty of damage to other regions....
I never said that.

ok so everyone is all up tight about swine flu. OOO noo it's coming just like any other flu you know the regular flu can kill people too.  I think it's just important to well idk wash your hands.  You know be smart don't hang out with your sick friends, cover your cough, and don't share drinks.  These are things I've known since kindergarden, I think that if everyone actually did them we could stop the spread of any virus.  Swine flu or regular flu it's just a virus.  Nothing to get all bothered over.  You know you can still eat your favorite pork dinner or bacon because you can't get swine flu from eating pork.

lol its just the flu

everyones afraid of getting sick. its just that this swine flu is more popular people want to attract the attention to one illness

theres many kinds of diseases and ways to b sick

just its similar to mono or nething rly just

im guessing that the media is trying to scare ppl

cuz they have nothing better to do besides harass celebrities

I have friends in countries where people are still dying from it...and I'm scared to death that I'll lose them.

this is phenomena is no different then the Avian Flu......Just a Punishment to the inept care of animals...
China and Mexico are both countries that have poor quality care for the Animals raised for food...
An Animal Lives in Filth and Desease and people are surprised it gets ill......

I'm just sorry so many innocent people died from it.

I don't think it is anything to be worried about either. Very few have died from it so far. People die from the regular flu all the time and nobody gets all worked up about it. I think the government is just trying to get us all scared and I think the Pharmaceutical companies just want to make money off the vaccine. I would highly recommend not getting the vaccine. I think it is worse than the virus itself. You have a good chance of not getting swine flu anyway. I would rather take my chances instead of letting the government inject something in my veins. Who knows what is in there. Actually I have read on some websites the ingredients and its pretty appalling. I have also heard that vaccines can give you diseases down the road and can disrupt your immune systems. I would rather wash my hands, stay away from sick friends and family, have a good diet, and take vitamins.
