When do you stop and when do you keep going?

...One late night I was exiting the expressway and there was a truck stopped at the side of the exit ramp.  On the ground, in front of the truck was a person. I swear I saw them raise their arm, imploring for help.  I was alone and afraid it was a set up, so I called 911.  I asked the officer if he wanted me to go back and he said no, for me to just go home.  He was sending a car to investigate.
...It is something that has always bothered me because I will never know what happened or what was going on.  Did they get help soon enough?  Are they ok?
...Have you ever been in a situation like this and what did you do?

I am always driving at night and seeing similiar type things. It is best just not to get involved. Let the police handle it. That is what they are there for.

What a dilemma and one that unfortunately has one answer you can't trust people always and you did the right thing by calling for help from the right place.  I hope they went to check it out but regardless you did the only thing you could do.

It is sad, but I wouldn't feel safe enough to stop either. I would absolutely call for help, but as for sticking around without anyone else I have to say I wouldn't.

If I encounter a situation like that I'd do exactly what you did.  It's too risky to stop and try to "save the day" for someone. 

It's enough that you cared enough to report it so someone could check it out.

I would have done the same thing. Hubby usually stops, but not when i am by myself, women are asking for trouble then. He also has his hand on the gun just in case although if it is late at night he sits in the car and calls for help., but so far no problems.

i would be curious what happened to the person too, maybe youcan contact the police station and they can ease your mind

I see people on the side of the freeways and roadways all the time. I never stop. My parents stopped stopping to help people some 20 years ago after several reports of people trying to be Good Samaritans being mugged or killed by the people they were trying to help. Sadly, some devious people use the kindness of others to lure them in and rob them (or worse). You did the right thing, but maybe you could call the police department or highway patrol that was responsible for the area and see if you can find out more information. Sometimes they can give general info, and it might help ease your concern.

I never stop for anyone. It's just not safe, but I have called 911 to help others I've seen on the road who appear to be in distress.

I agree, as a woman I never stop. I have taught my daughters that too. I know my husband does.

Sadly in this day and age I always call the police if there is something going on.  I am not equipped to handle some situations and I am not going to put myself in danger.  That's what the police are for.
