Peanut butter...
« on: January 01, 2013, 02:32:35 am »
Has anyone ever made their own peanut butter? Has anyone ever tried any other kinds of "butters", like almond butter? I want to make my own peanut butter and I'd really like to make almond butter, cashew butter, and any other kind I could. I think they'd be really good!

Have never tried to but I'm sure if you google it you can find tons of recipes to make it.

Many years ago I used my Vitamix blender to make my own peanut butter.  As I remember it was rather dry.  I don't remember if I added any oil, etc.

So.....I googled it for you:

Peanut Butter

Submitted by:  Vitamix
Dietary Interest:  vegetarian, gluten-free, low cholesterol, low sodium, no added sugar, vegan
Yield:
1 3/4 c (420 g)
Difficulty:
Intermediate
Total Time:
10 Minutes
Print:
8.5x11
Save to:
Recipe Book
Ingredients

    3 cups (420 g) unsalted roasted peanuts

Directions

Pour nuts into the Vitamix container and secure lid.
    Select Variable 1.
Turn machine on and slowly increase speed to Variable 10, then to High, using the tamper to push the ingredients into the blades.
In 1 minute, you will hear a high pitched chugging sound. Once the butter begins to flow freely through the blades, the motor sound will change from a high pitch to a low laboring sound. Stop machine.
Store in an airtight container. It can also be frozen for longer storage.

CAUTION: Over processing will cause serious overheating to your machine! Do not process for more than 1 minute after mixture starts circulating freely. For recipe variation, see Cashew Nut Butter and Almond Butter recipes.

I have never attempted to make my own Peanut Butter, but I am sure it would contain less calories and fat without all the preservatives that other companies add to preserve the product.

I made my own peanut butter cups (like Reese's) before, and I've been wanting to do it again. That's what reminded me of this little device I saw a long time ago that was specifically made to use for making your own nut-butters. I'm thinking it might be healthier to make it myself, plus it would have a different taste and I might could tweak the recipe to create something unique.  ;D

@jkhanson Thanks for recipe guide. If I ever do get the opportunity to try this, I'll probably check google and see what else I might could find.

No never made own peanut butter or any of the other kinds of nut butters.  I have been tempted to try some of the other nut butters for years because am always seeing them at the health food store but never thought about or tried to make own.  If you do, let us know how they turn out.

I wish I had a Vitamix, but it is too costly for me right now.

I have made peanut butter as well as almond butter. Almond butter is great for baking. I use allot of ground almonds in place of flour as well. Almond flour makes great cookies !

I just bought almond butter for the first time from wal-mart.  It was pricey but when I compared the price of convenience to what it would cost to make it was just a little cheaper.  There is a recipe book I checked out from the local library called Foods that fight Fibromyalgia by Deirdre Rawlings.  There is a (what looks to be simple) recipe for making almond butter.  After tasting the almond butter I thought it reminded me of a snickers bar w/almonds. Not bad!  I'm using it for smoothies because for substituting it as PB just doesn't make sense as in Cents as far as I'm concerned.  The book is great though I've had to check it out 3 x's because it has had so many successful recipes in it.
