Since 86% of the country wants God on our money, pledge etc., I do wonder why we have to kowtow to the 14% that don't.

The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was placed on United States coins largely because of the increased religious sentiment existing during the Civil War. The use of IN GOD WE TRUST has not been uninterrupted. The motto disappeared from the five-cent coin in 1883, and did not reappear until production of the Jefferson nickel began in 1938. Since 1938, all United States coins bear the inscription. Later, the motto was found missing from the new design of the double-eagle gold coin and the eagle gold coin shortly after they appeared in 1907. In response to a general demand, Congress ordered it restored, and the Act of May 18, 1908, made it mandatory on all coins upon which it had previously appeared. IN GOD WE TRUST was not mandatory on the one-cent coin and five-cent coin. It could be placed on them by the Secretary or the Mint Director with the Secretary's approval.

For those of you who dont knoiw then read please!!!!! :BangHead:

What is your opinion on the phrase, I think it was put on the dollar as a symbol for all faiths.

Sure. If you look back to early American history the type of god or religion was never named especially for that reason. While many did have a certain faith/ideoology their were also other branches of those same beliefs. Rather than have a government arguing over the father, the son, and the holy ghost are all god, or if they are three gods, or if they cant even really exist, etc by just saying "god" it would afford the rights to everyone, without argument, no matter what.

Take the writings of Thomas Paine, who was in fact a deist, and his beliefs were of "natures God". He had expressed his belief that he did believe in god but not the god that was referred to in any of the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam). But regardless of his belief his rights were protected under the idea of "god".

It was also a great tool to stop any leaders from reversing rights. If they are given to you by god, then they can not be taken away. Some may argue that rights have been taken away or infringed upon. I wont get into that because I have my own opinions on those topics.

But yes, keeping it general was done to incorporate all faiths

I don't have a problem with it but I've always thought it was somewhat contrary to the founding principle of separation of religion and state. Seems kind of ironic nowdays though because it is kind of hard to trust our government, especially when it comes to the value of our currency.

I think "In God we Trust" belongs on money and in a lot of other places. We are His children. We need the saying to remind us that our trust should be placed with Him - not man, not our government and not those that try to keep God out of everything.

Our country was founded on a strong belief on a higher power.  All the states preamble have mention of this also.  I also believe that if we keep pushing God out of our country, we are doomed!
I agree that this statement is so true.

I believe it was put on the paper currency as a reminder by our forefathers.  After all, these people ran away from tyranny and religious persecution to start a "new" and "better" way of life for themselves as well as all others that would follow and I believe they felt it was because of their trust and faith in God that they continued on their quest, which of course, became our America!!!  As for faiths of all denominations, I would agree that 99.9% believe in "God".
