I agree if they can afford cigarettes and alcohol they can work. They shouldnt get as much foodstamps as some of them people get. Some people feel that they make more staying home on the system than they would working. They should also limit what they can buy with the foodstamps. A few months back on facebook I saw a receipt for someone that a bunch of lobsters, steak bottled water and a couple other top of the line meats 197.00 or something like that. I know I cant afford lobster on what I get or steaks for that matter. Why should they be able to.

My comment is that people shouldn't abuse the system. Those who have have made it hard for some people to get help when needed. If you don't have children you are basically screwed and some with children with a true need have a hard time. People are going to do what they want to do anyway. People who smoke, drink, or do drugs will get it no matter what. It's something we have to deal with.

I've seen this before myself. I've also seen welfare people buy over $50 worth of groceries with food stamps, none of which was actually food (it was all candy, soda, and other junk that is not nourishing). Food stamps should only be for  the basic necessities, plain meat, potatoes and vegetables. The governemnt has a chance to control the obesity epidemic, as well as general unhealthiness, by only allowing plain healthy food to be bought with food stamps.

I wholeheartedly apologize if my post came across wrong.  I was referring to the original poster talking about people buying their beer with their cash.  I am truly not of that belief at all.  I am a true believer in there is a real group of people who need and deserve the assistance and that unfortunately, there also is a real group of people out there who do not really need them, but get them and there are people who sell them.  It is unfortunate.  But not everyone who utilizes the programs lives on Section 8, collects stamps and sits home doing nothing but drinking and smoking cigarettes all day long.

The majority of people who are on welfare should not be. Most of them could get a job, but unfortunately they find it more lucrative to live on the system, and they are just plain lazy. For people with bad backs, there are plenty of none physical jobs. And for the rest, they can do the work that is currently being done by illegal aliens, under the pretext that American workers won't take those jobs.

I did not know you could buy cigarettes and alcohol with food stamps, but each state have a different set of rules.

I agree with you to some extent but not all people sell there food stamps or use their money to buy smokes and things like that so how would you actually point out who is buying what and selling what in this world.  It would be too much work for the county workers to keep updated as almost 80 percent of each state receives some kind of assistance.

People who receive food stamps can not buy cigarettes or alcohol with them. If anyone sees them buy that even with the money part of it they can report them. If more people would report this type of abuse of welfare we would have less people on them.

What I agree on is that the one's that need it should receive it. The people who are here illegally receiving it and just draining the system make it bad for the state's to provide for they low income American's, it's bad and that should be fixed. Imagine the billion's saved, also those who have brought their senior's here from other country's and get on Social Security and never worked a day in this country. The reason why Republican's do not like these system's is because if give's (GIFTS) to those who not  American's. They wont say that but it is what they are thinking. Fix the problem's.  If we don't provide it then they wont come. I am all for legally gaining citizenship. As hard as Black's fought to have a right to vote and just go to school among white's. I wont even think about the time when WOMEN had to fight for that vote right. I think no one should be given a pass and then not fight in they own country for the right of things they need. We here in America have enough problem's with unemployment due to low wages and so may abusing systems. You may not agree with me, but one thing my father taught me speak my mind no matter who feeling's you hurt because it is your right. If they do not wanna listen then they should move on. If you are offended then speak your peace and you move on from that. I'm always gonna be who I am.  I am not gonna sugar coat anything just because it may hurt feeling's. I don't expect that from anyone also. When I say I am offended I am speaking my mind. I don't even need your apology because it is what it is.

The system is drained, and I'm happy that our government is considering how keeping these programs open to any and everyone is hurting our economy. Drug testing should have been a requirement for public assistance long before 2011/2012. These programs need to be replaced with job readiness, and job awareness programs.

I have nothing wrong with those that need a little extra to get by,, because it is hard to make it on what they are making, But to just all out live off welfare is not right. There should be some kind of work programs for them to justify living completely on welfare. As for drugs etc. that is not what it was intended for. But i have seen it time and time again all the junk food they buy, and trading the steaks and high price meats to another person waiting outside. Then that same person who used the stamps (card now) will go back in and buy booze and cigs. It is wrong.
