Is anybody following the news on these 20 states?
« on: November 12, 2012, 11:45:54 pm »
Wow, I just read this about the 20 states of Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas having petitioned to seceed from the nation after this election.  Wow...put some thought into that if New York and Texas are involved...man, that is truly scary to think about.

Regardless of why the petitions were floated, it is settled law that the Constitution does not permit unilateral secession. A state or group of states cannot simply leave the Union over the objections of the national government.

The petitions are more believable than any superstitious religious belief's mythologies.

That sounds silly; where are they going to go? They can't move "off the map".

I found an article published this morning that indicates these petitions were opened on the White House website - where there is a forum to open a petition and if the petition gathers 25,000 signatures in 30 days, the petition is automatically "reviewed" by the White House.  According to the article, as of this morning, there are now petitions for 47 of the 50 states running now, and 9 states have more than one open petition.  These petitions are more symbolic than actual attempts to secede.

The second page of the article provided some interesting trivia regarding rules of secession for Vermont, Alaska and Texas.  The most interesting was that Texas when it joined the union, it allowed provision to divide its land into 5 territories, and each territory is entitled to be admitted to the United States as its own individual state.  If ever exercised, that could turn Texas from one state into 5.  That would be somewhat interesting...particularly how that might impact the Senate.

Interesting, however; it sounds like an empty threat.

Well Texas is the only one that can legally do it since it joined the United States as an independant republic.

Oh this happens every so often. It is more of a way showing how tired of all the dang stuff that is pulled in Washington. Although i ofter wonder what would happen if they suceeded . How would congress be able to get by without all the extra money they are shelling out.

I definitely share some of their issues with the Federal Government.  It's power has been growing a lot over the past 20 years or so.  Both Bush and Obama for example have extended the power of the presidency through their actions (i.e. recess appointments).  Much of what the federal government currently does goes against the original meaning of the U.S. Constitution and I find it sad that instead of voting to amend it, many in both parties (including some Supreme Court Justices) have decided to ignore that meaning or go with looser interpretations of what they think it means.  This of course leads to a few words of the Constitution being taken out of context and their meaning trumping the original meaning.  If the Constitution needs to be changed, that's fine.  Vote to change it.  They should stop acting as though it is a burden to getting things done and actually amend it.  As it stands, the U.S. Constitution doesn't really mean much of anything because it isn't upheld.

All that to say, I certainly understand the gripes that those who signed the petition have with the Federal Government, but the reality is that they will not be allowed to secede based on these petitions.  That is my 2 cents on this issue.

From what I have read today there are a lot more than 20 States at this point and the numbers are still growing.  I think it's good that the States are taking a stand even though it might be a bit scary.  We cannot allow the America we all grew up loving to be thrown to the dogs and not stand up and fight.  So, I say bravo and let's get our AMERICA BACK!!!!!
