Naked Lunch
« on: October 31, 2012, 02:11:42 pm »
This morning I finished "Naked Lunch" by William S. Burroughs. I spent most of the book trying to figure out if I was in the middle of the prologue or epilogue, and at the end, realized both were true. This book is so fantastically obscene, it "demands" the reader's silence and attention, as the author so eloquently states. Brilliant book, though not at all for the faint of heart. Stunning- in as many ways possible. I'd like to have a little throw around over this book. Anyone have any thoughts? Please, not just random disapproving remarks!

I never read the book, but I saw most of the movie once.  Very bizzare movie!  Didn't quite understand what was going on.

Is it just lunch or, is there naked breakfast before and naked dinner after?
One can lead a horse to water however, if one holds the horse's head under, that horse will drown.

You just better read the book or see the movie, MISTER.

So, it's no use asking about a naked brunch or, naked midnight-snacks then?

Regarding the obscenity and bizarre-ness of the book, and movie.....
Burroughs was a known......ummmm....shall we say DABBLER....in use of many different drugs (hallucinogenics definitely), as well as enjoying quite an abundance of them whenever possible.

Sounds like a good costume ... depending upon who is (not) wearing it.

The movie is not a very new one.....let's see....OK, IMDB says December of 1991 it was released in theaters.
It stars Peter Weller, Roy Scheider and Julian Sands are also in it (and a bunch of other names that I'm not familiar with).

To reaffirm what KSimonetti92 said about it (the book) being "fantastically obscene", here's an idea of what critics had to say about the MOVIE:

Roger Ebert - "While I admired it in an abstract way, I felt repelled by the material on a visceral level."

David Ansen (Newsweek) - "Obviously this is not everybody's cup of weird tea: you must have a taste for the esthetics of disgust. For those up to the dare, it's one clammily compelling movie."

If you like weird.....REALLY weird....this is a movie for you.
And likely the book is equally strange, if not more so....I think I'm going to look for it today.

And about the author, William S. Burroughs......did you know he killed (shot) his common-law wife?

Yes, indeed he did....at a party in Mexico City, while enjoying a drunken game of William Tell........

yes... the movie is strange and oddly grotesque!
there's a talking vagina-insect-thing and it's so disgusting.
it's also somewhat alluring and you want to keep watching it.
i've seen it several times.

never read the book, but my fiance is a big william s. burroughs
fan, so i know of it. i'm sure you'll like it, if you liked the book.
[ we all have a place in history. mine is in the clouds. ]

Thank you for all your insight, duroz!
@ fALCON9, to put it bluntly, I don't think ANYONE would be able to properly describe this book unless they themselves did a bit of "dabbling" first! This book is not meant to be "understood", it's just meant to tell several hard to swallow truths.
I'm having a hard time finding a copy of this movie, unsurprisingly.  I asked a clerk at the local video store, and the gentleman said this: "Ma'am, I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to leave."    :angry7:

Those are curious endorsements, (from you both and the video store clerk).  Now, on another subject; how do you do that much in human tasks?
