A profit from a god? No. The only propheting (or profiting) he was doing was from taking advantage of the weak-minded.
Joseph Smith was a con artist before and after he supposedly talked to an angel and began his cult. He started when he was a teenager and grew up around taking advantage of people, so it's logical to conclude he made it all up to benefit himself. Upon his death (where he gunned down 2 people and injured another) he had power over a lot of people and, surprisingly enough, their assets. Do a quick google search on "Joseph Smith Con Artist" and you'll get
plenty of information on how dispicable of a person he truly was. Why Mormons revere this guy is beyond me. The whole 'religion' is based upon fraud and laughable stories (did you know Adam and Eve are from Jackson County, Missouri?).
This is why I'm such a fan of James Randi's work. If you claim to have divine powers, you gotta prove it through a realistic test. Even when Joseph Smith was technically tested by Lucy Harris (she hid Joseph Smith's divine 'rough draft' of the Book of Mormon and said it was lost, and Joseph Smith had to rewrite it and it was much different in the 2nd draft), he failed.
You may think that one man couldn't possibly be able to create a religion this large and that something like this could only grow with divine powers and whatnot, but you must remember you live in a world where Scientology exists. People were
a lot more gullible in the 19th century than they are now. Sadly, "divine prophets" are still pulling this same stunt in poor parts of nations claiming they're divine individuals and living like royalty off of the backs of hard working people.
