Do small kittens usually sit on your shoulders?
« on: September 19, 2012, 09:37:25 pm »
We got a 2 month old kitten this evening, and he seems to want to be perched on my shoulder like a bird. I don't think I have ever seen this. He finally settled in the recliner so I can use the computer now. lol.

Ummmmmm.  No - good thing to - I'm allergic.  Sniff Sniff  :crybaby2: I adore kitties so that's a bummer.

My friend always comes home to a small fur-ball leaping off the counter and onto her shoulder. And she'll (the kitty) just sit there until my friend finally shoos her away or supper is served.

That's the first I heard of that, but it does make sense.  I would think on your shoulder, near your neck, would be a warm place - plus cats like to be in high places, so on your shoulder would be a good vantage point.  The combination probably makes them feel very safe.  And the soft cozy next to you is a bonus for you!  :)

It is very common for kittens, and even adult cats, to do that, if you let them. Even our standoffish cats will occasionally do it, if we happen to be sitting down and they can get there from the back of the couch. I sure won't let them climb up me with their sharp claws!

I have never had a small kitten do that to me, only large adult cats.  Still funny, just much less sustainable.

It depends on the cat. Some are very friend and sociable and others like to really keep to themselves

Awww I think that is showing you that the kitty loves you. My kitty when I was young did all sort of cuddly things but never that one. That is so cute and cuddly.  :cat:

Cats like to be at the highest point in the room. When they want to be near you, they usually want too be on your head. Most of the time owners do not allow this (it hurts!) so they settle for the shoulder. If you are consistent about not letting them do it, they will stop the habit.
I did not do it and ended up with a 19 lb cat constantly climbing onto my neck and shoulders and wanting to be carried around the house that way! LOL

I had over 12 kittens during my childhood. Only 2 of them ever attempted to climb onto my shoulders.

I had a kitten that did exactly that.  She loved to be close and feel the warmth of my body.  Some cats never grow out of it, LOL.  Consider yourself privileged - kitty really LOVES you.  :)

I've had a couple that did that.

I also had one that would be halfway on my shoulder and chest and suck on my ear.  She was a pure white Manx and was the prettiest cat ever!
