I'm more concerned about a person's health/fitness than weight. In fact, there are studies showing that there are some people with a BMI that is considered "overweight" or "obese", but are actually healthier than others with a "normal" BMI.
Many of my trainers tell me they no longer tell their clients to watch the scale, as when you work on becoming more fit, the scale really doesn't matter...and for some people, the weight actually increases. Reason is many "average" people have very little muscle tone, so once they start doing some weight training, their weight increases, yet they fit into their clothes better (at least to a point).
I'm more of an athletic build, and am always frustrated with clothes for women, that assume we have the body type of adolescents. I have to buy pants that are 2-3 sizes larger to fit over my thighs/butt, and then have about 6-8 inches slack at the waist. Looking to custom make my clothes because fashion just doesn't get it anymore.
Another thing that frustrates me is lack of education in the schools. I train with several teenage girls in figure skating. The girls all look basically like the ones you see on TV in skating competition. Several of them were recently told by their school nurses that they were at risk for being obese because of their BMI calculation. Can you believe that?!? They don't get that these girls are mostly muscle - that's why their weight is high, not because they are "obese".
I think if people stopped obsessing with the scale, and concentrated more on whether or not they are capable of doing activities they want (run in a race, swim so many laps, do yard work without getting winded, etc) - people will be a lot happier and healthier in the long run.
