You are missing one HUGE factor, I only use Linux for surfing the net and gmail, so if I did get a virus it would take me a few minutes to reinstall it and be back in business. All my gmails would still be there.

Nothing was missed since I could reformat my windows-based O.S. and achieve the same result.  The point of mentioning an overlooked problem with Linux is mixed-use/cross-platform internet environments.  Yes, both Linux and win-pc users can reformat & reinstall however, that's after malware/virii infection, (not as a protective measure).

You missed the point. I have reinstalled my Windows machine and it takes WEEKS to sort out all the details (if you ever do), but with my Linux machine ONLY concerned with the Internet, the complexities are non existent. I'm not saying to abandon Windows (I could never do that), just separate out the Internet tasks and put them on Linux.

No, I caught that inherent point as well, (whether either assumption is made; an internet-only machine and/or an off-net machine).  It's true that restoring any files not stored on external media can be time-consuming.
One can lead a horse to water however, if one holds the horse's head under, that horse will drown.
