No, I don't believe so.  The Batman movie did not set this guy off - he would have shot up another theater if not that one.

Everyone with a sound mind knows it is all make believe, but a disturbed person see things in a totally different way. My generation was brought up on scary and outlandish movies. Their are some i just wouldn't watch and wouldn't let my kids watch mainly because i and they would have nightmares but didn't go out and kill someone. Some of the video games are so much worse.

Batman has definitey evolved over the years into a more sinister, violent character but is still a good guy fighting crime.  Some of the other characters in the batman movies do represent pure evil.  Those are the characters that probably should be toned down a bit.  Although many young children love the Batman characters, the movies are definitely made for adults.  However, if a person is mentally imbalanced any character from any movie can trigger their violent actions.

Apparently, "batman" brings out some inherent "evil" in at least one viewer; unless "evil" is being falsely attributed to "batman" movies like "good" is falsely attributed to some xtian g-d.

No. That guy was a whack job. If he didn't base his attack off of the Batman movie he would have just used another movie. The same thing has been said about music, and how people listen to songs and then go kill someone because of a song. It's ridiculous. Crazy people will look for any excuse to cover up their actions. We live in a sick world. We all have free will and the ability to choose our actions. It's sad that some choose the evil and psychotic path.

That's one of the main problems with invalid attributions; the conclusion doesn't follow from a false premise.

The guy is not right.   He was going to carry out his plan whether it was Batman or something else. 

I don't think there is a trend.  The reason you didn't hear about these things in the 50's, 60's and 70's was there were NOT news outlets 24 hours a day, 7 days a week trying to report stories that no one had.  3 channels, 30 minutes a day.  Trying to get an angle no one else has, trying to out gross the other channels.  I think a lot of the "news" that the channels report, is lots of speculation, this is what we think happened, and this is the neighbor from 10 years ago and what he thinks.  This happens time and time again before all the facts are in.  By the time the facts are in people already think they know  what really happened.
