identity theft or mistake?
« on: August 06, 2012, 05:49:36 pm »
i got 2 letters in the mail stating that tried to sign up for bill me later through ebay and i was denied coz of the things i have on my credit. i never hit the bill me later button. when i win an item i pay for it out right and i dont wait. i wonder if someone got my info and tried using it or its someone phishing for info. i tried to call the number on the back of the one letter and it gave me an automated voice and wanted me to put in my info to get my credit score. now, before i worked for a bank i would just through this mail away with out opening it but i know that things can happen and identity theft happens everyday and i have to be the one to prevent it from getting passed me so i'm gonna look up the company to see if it's legit and then i'm gonna write to paypal and ebay about the situation because it's all connected. i dont know why the other letter didnt have a phone number for me to call. i dont remember ever hitting bill me later so i dont know whats going on. i dont pay with my credit card so they dont have my info. do i look more into it or just let it go because i dont want to give potential scammers my info? i think this dinged my credit and im ticked off about that coz it should of never happened. i need to take back my good name.

Wow I'm the first to comment back neat! Ok, first I would go to Ebay and find the phone number there, or I believe you can send them an email at the contact us section, They send me emails all the time but I have never got mail from them so it is probably worth looking into.

I would be careful if i was you with paypal as well.  Because i  have been (attempted) scammed by PAYPAL not once but twice as to them letting a person who bid and won an item i had listed PAY me INTO a bank account that had been closed for almost 2 years and PAYPAL was not even supposed to have saved that 2year old bank account info LIKE THEY CLAIM they dont keep all your deleted records/account numbers. and then they let a bogus company on the web that turned out to be totally fake, purchase and USE THE PAY THROUGH PAYPAL logo on there BOGUS website, only for me to find out the company was fake and PAYPAL to tell me it was my FAULT for not researching the company first. ??????

Well, if it is a scam you're either dealing with someone that's extremely stupid or someone that's extremely confident their scam will work.  Leaving evidence like a paper trail seems kind of out of place, plus a waste of money if they were mailing them out to thousands of people.  If you can't get a straight answer from someone with out having to enter your CC info, I'd take that letter to the Better Business Bureau and see if they can help you sort it out.  Make sure to make printed copies of it too so you have a back-up of the actual letter they mailed.

When in doubt on something this serious it's best to contact them ASAP so you can figure out what's going on and cancel the bill me later option if that's what's causing this.  Identity theft is on the rise, especially online.  I've had someone log into one of my online sites and still $6.29 from me by entering their email into the paypal address box and I couldn't get it back b/c the payment was immediate.  I started to email the person and tell them they didn't have to steal $6 from me, if they needed it that bad I would've given it to them. I was advised to change my password and I advise you to do the same if you haven't already.

It sounds to me like it's probably a phishing attempt, rather than identity theft. But you can easily check with Paypal to see if they have a record of you signing up for Bill Me Later. If they don't, then you don't have to worry about anything. Just don't call or email any number or address that was given to you in the letter, and certainly don't give them any of your information.
If Paypal does say that you signed up for BML, then you are in trouble because someone must have gotten you account info somehow. You'll have to convince them that it wasn't you.

I buy and sell on ebay and let me tell you one day I got a letter in my email that said it was from paypal and my instinct told me it wasnt. For one I know that all my paypal emails have that green shield on them and this one didn't. That's one thing to watch out for. I would contact both paypal and bill me later and let them know I didnt' sign up for nothing. Also you may want to check your credit report to make sure no one is using you for identity theft.

i called ebay about the situation the other day and they have no idea about the letters going out and they said the banks they come from are fake and they didnt need the names. i told them that i never hit the bill me later feature and the lady didnt understand what i was trying to say. i told her i got 2 actual letters in an actual envelope from the post stating that i hit and signed up for this feature and was denied coz what was on my credit and she keep calling it an email. they said thanks for letting us know and dont give the people any info. i didnt give them any info and i didnt respond to the letter. i got pissed at her coz she kept calling it an email which it wasnt. lady, u are not listening to me! DO NOT CALL A PAPER LETTER AND EMAIL STUPID@! i thought she would get it coz u know she probably checks her physical mail box everyday but some people are just that dumb. wow i feel smart now.
