People I Admire - Famous, Not-So-Famous, and Infamous
« on: August 06, 2012, 11:49:01 am »
Are there any people in your life that you especially admire?  Right now, there are two people I deeply admire for their courage in the most difficult of times.  A little over a year ago, the 10-year-old daughter of a friend was diagnosed with osteosarcoma.  Since that time she has undergone innumerable treatments (which are in and of themselves difficult, to say the least), a brief remission, then a heart-rending relapse that has so far cost her a leg.  In the last couple of weeks, she has undergone surgery to remove a tumor in her residual leg.  Another friend in her late twenties was diagnosed with breast cancer.  She has a husband and two children.  She is now undergoing painful treatments for the cancer.  Come to think of it, I admire everyone in those two families.  They are all supremely supportive of their loved ones.  Both of these young ladies have accounts with CaringBridge, com, a website dedicated to supporting patients with serious illnesses.  If you know of anyone who is on CaringBridge.com, I know they would be grateful if you would send them a note online of encouragement.  These people say the day-to-day messages they get online are a great help in getting them through the dark days.

I have a true admiration for fire fighters and police officers who put their own lives on the line daily for our health and safety.  These people in uniform have always been my true heroes.  Oh, maybe it's because my dad was our town's fire chief for years, but I do admire them all for all they do.  My second highest respect behind that has to go to the men and women of our Armed Forces, laying it all on the line for this great nation and all it stands for.

Yesterday, my husband and I attended a surprise birthday party for my late brother's mother-in-law.  Margot is a 90-year-old ball of fire and one of the sweetest people I know.  One of her favorite pastimes is to visit Atlantic City with a friend and play the slots.  She can run up and down stairs faster than some 30-year-olds.  She certainly has a lot more energy than I do.
