If you need to get your computer fixed, where do you take it?

I usually take my computer to the local shop.  They are pretty cheap and do a good job.  Had to have a hard drive put in and they ordered the new drive, transferred all the software, files, pics, etc from the good one and only charged my 100.00 which included price of the hard drive and only had my computer for a day.  The other place I called said that it would be 180.00 and they were not sure they could transfer everything.  Think I got a good deal, so now I only deal with them.

I know  someone who lives in the next town.
He knows quite a lot and has a few repair tools [example: to transfer files from one computer to another].
CompUSA has been a recommendation.

I go to Star Labs and throw-down on Superman to make him fix my stuff.   Sadly, when he's not available I've been teaching myself how to build and fix my own stuff.  *shakes fist*   :-X

I rather learn to fix my own computer just like I did when I built it from scratch. Its really fun to build your own computer and then, you can take out any part and upgrade it to something better.

For software related issues - I typically take care of those myself.  I haven't had any real hardware issues - except for a hard drive that fizzled under warranty, so I had it replaced by a technician under the warranty.  If something else breaks - I guess it will depend how accessible the part it and how expensive.  If it's buried and beyond my comfort level in disassembling the machine - I would probably call around for a best quote.  If it's within reach - I'd do it myself.

I took it to Best Buy once they didn't fix it just looked at it.  It would cost a lot to fix it so I just took it back home and did a system restore and it was fine.

I usually move it to a work bench to fix it.

I once made the mistake and allowed the Geek Squad from Best Buy to fix it.  They charged me a lot of money and never fixed the problem.  It was an expensive lesson, but never again.  I go to a local repair shop and he isn't expensive and he does a great job.
