Do hamsters stink?
« on: April 02, 2009, 08:54:25 pm »
My father is thinking of getting some hamsters.  He says they are very clean but I don't believe him.  Does anybody know if they stink?

Yeah, they can if you don't keep their cage super clean.

Of course, If you don't keep the cage clean. I used to have one and I kept the cage extra clean, ALWAYS!!
That strong smell is too hard to get rid of.

i would never own one, but my friend has a couple which add a certain unpleasant smell to her home.

it is not necessarily the animal itself that smells, it is their urine & feces and their bedding that smells.of course, like any animal you have to keep their cage clean.

i've had a rat, mouse and hamster.  Hamster smelled the least.  But I may have kept up on cleaning better.

I've had several hamsters over the years, and I have one now. And I can say that it's not the hamsters that stink, but their cages, if you don't clean them. And even their cages aren't that bad. RABBITS are a different story. That's why you keep them outside. Just saying. But I think that overall, hamsters ARE pretty clean animals in comparison with other animals their size.
