Pet Adoption from Shelters
« on: July 31, 2012, 10:40:04 pm »
We know buying a puppy from a pet store is not a great deal. To all FC pet owners who adopted dogs or cats from the shelter…   :cat: how much did it cost you to take home your beloved pet?  :dog:

It has been quite a few years since I have adopted from a pet shelter.  At that time it cost $20.00 to adopt a pet.  I believe it is more expensive now to adopt from a shelter, but if I were ever going to get another dog, I would only get it from a shelter.

No, I have two dogs already and don't anticipate the need for another dog anytime soon.

Both dogs we have owned were adopted from a shelter.  If memory serves me, I think they were $150 each.

One of the two actually wandered into our yard one summer on a Sunday.  He had no tags and his chip was never activated.  We walked him around all afternoon but no one recognized or knew him.  Monday we brought him to the shelter and told them if no one came to claim him that we'd be interested in adopting.  Two weeks later, they called and we took him home after they neutered him.

Sadly, we lost him in late April due to a tumor bursting on his spleen, and ultimately had to put him down.  He was a wonderful boy.

More people need to look into adopting.  There are so many good dogs sitting in shelters right now looking for good homes.

The last time I adopted a dog from a shelter, I paid $50. She was a good dog and very smart. She knew how to climb the fence and kept getting out of the yard. One day during one of her outings she was hit by a car and killed. We were all very sad. The time we had her was special and she will be missed. If I had the time, money, and space, I would adopt every dog and cat from our local shelter and find them all good homes so that they wouldn't have to euthanized.

I volunteer at a local no kill cat shelter and the adoption fee is $50 for adult cats and $100 for kittens but there are frequent specials.  They are even considering having other people sponsor (pay the adoption fee) a cat for adoption because that worked well in Joplin following the tornado.  Unfortunately, around here, there are people who will get free dogs and cats and take them out for target practice.  Those are the ones who should be in cages!

If you want a dog or cat but aren't ready to adopt, please consider volunteering.  There are lots of ways to help :)

We got a cat from a shelter about 5 years ago.  They had too many cats at the time, so any over 1 year old were only $25 to adopt.  I think all the vaccinations they gave him were much more than that.  I think a lot of the times shelter pets can be really great because it's like you are giving them a second chance.
