I know that the punishment for Penn State not only hurt the school, but it also hurt the players. Because the people who had a reckless disregard for the welfare of children should be the only ones that are penalized for their failure to disclose information. For the Penn State football players who believed in the tradition of Penn State and played their hearts out every game will suffer the most. To me the players were penalized more than the people responsible for the cover up of the child abuse scandal.

If this wasn't the scandal it was and it this was just about cheating condoned and hidden by everyone in the institution, the entire institution would still have to take a big hit because those players, even if they weren't involved, benefited from the improprieties of the institution. You can't say "well, we benefited here, but not here" and dissect it. Once it's all tainted, you burn it all. Those involved should have thought about the reputation of their institution, their students, and most importantly, those kids.
