Is the intent of this thread meant to suggest people from Texas are uneducated or what?

Yes

I lived there for a bit while I was eluding the authorities.  I did manage to convince a police officer that had me in handcuffs I was a black man (I am white btw), though, and he apparently believed me enough that he found it unnecessary to run me in and check my prints and so he released me with a warning (he found my cheater bar in my front seat to fit the definition of an illegal weapon initially).  I don't know if that speaks to education, although I faintly recall that after he released me I thought to myself "he is either the dumbest cop I have ever encountered -- or the laziest"...

anybody with a 5th grade education knows that the moon does not produce its own light.   Not sure why people would assume the moon is a star.  oh well :star:

Apparently, it took considerable time for the "green cheese" hypothesis to be debunked as well, (although there may still be some diehard hold-outs).
One can lead a horse to water however, if one holds the horse's head under, that horse will drown.

You are assuming that was what they though though.  For as much as I could tell from the information available, they may have booed the man because he was telling them common sense information (such as the moon reflects the Sun's light) and they were insulted by his assumption that they were ignorant or that this was the best science this guy had to offer them.  There is just nothing to go on here as there isn't enough information.

Decent spin attempt but it says in the article......

One woman yelled "We believe in God!" and left with three children
This is response to Nye stating that the Moon isn't a light

But we don't know the context of the outburst.  Without a transcript or video/sound we have nothing to go by at all.  Perhaps Nye said "God doesn't exist" or something and the woman reacted in such a way.  We really don't know do we?

No, it isn't a giant reach.  Why was Nye pointing out this fact that I assume everybody knows?  It seems to me the conclusion to come to was that it was some form of religious bashing being perpetrated.  I find that the most plausible scenario and the most probable result in any simulation.  We don't really know do we, as I said, so I cannot make my claims as anything more than the most likely occurrence, where yours seems to rely on the audience never having read any science book, never having attended school, never having watched any television, and never having gazed at the moon in another's presence.

I think that a Texan claiming that the bible is right and science is evil is much more likely.

I want to hear his Mars exploration lecture.

Also, can we give Texas back to Mexico?

I didn't say believing in God makes you a hillbilly. I said living in Texas makes you a hillbilly.  Standing up for what you believe in is NOT always commendable. What if you believe in racism or sexism? Is standing up for what you believe respectable then?

I'll proudly take the hillbilly title then, I love Texas and don't plan on living anywhere else. And I would gladly battle you in any form of wits. I received full academic scholarships based on my SAT scores and was a national merit scholar. So, no. All Texans are no uneducated. Nice try though.

And that's a valid point about standing up for your beliefs. I am just saying I'd rather have some *bleep* (not literally) than get walked all over.

That's a unique interpretation. Too bad that's not what it says.

Actually, Genesis 1:16 states, "God made two great lights--the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars." Never does it say the smaller one produces its own light. So, how am I wrong is saying that both God and science are accurate? It is a known fact that light is lost each time it is reflected off of a surface, therefore lesser light.

The rate this country is going, I do very much wish Texas would become it's own Republic again.

I can confirm knowing some extremely well-educated, (and naturally "smart"), Texans with whom I've personally interacted, (as well as some who would be most likely to appear on "COPS") - not only online but, in person.  As for a 'battle of wits', I'd like to take you up on that extended offer.  Here or, over in the D+D subforum.

Don't battle him he is a national merit scholar. I am sure this has led him to a lucrative and lavish lifestyle.

Lavish ... mmm ... wait a sec, quiet you!  The opponent (clay pidgeon) must decide such things (boiled like a lobster or deep-fried like a turkey-leg, some choice) for themselves.  Besides, I've only been in a few (hundreds) debates (unmitigated metaphical blood-lettings) which were formally amiable (worse than having sharp wooden stakes that have been lit on fire and jabbed into the eyes repeatedly).  No monetary compensation (wine, women, personal jet) was received for this, I'm not a paid 'professional' (don't try this at home if you're an amateur).  Naturally, such an invitation (duel-to-the-metaphorical-death), can be either accepted or declined by any involved parties (please step over the smoking ruins of defeated opponents), without recrimination (you weaseling wiper of electric donkey-bottoms, run away - run away!).  Thank you.
