RENTERS.. and Disability
« on: March 19, 2012, 02:05:37 am »
Does anyone know what.. or where to look for info...

Renters... who rent without a disability...
.... but become disabled.

Renter is still in said house...

Are owners responsible for improvements I guess you would say to house... for safety?

ie.. hand rails on steps, hand rails in shower and or ramp?

I am curious to see if anyone knows the facts of the ADA pertaining to renters.

Thanks in advance!

Honestly I doubt that the owner if the house is responsible for a person who becomes disabled. That expense would fall on the disabled person. In addition to that, the renter needs permission from the owner in order to make those improvements.

I am disabled, but I talked to my landlord before I moved in and ask if I needed hand rails, stair lift, etc. if he would object.  His reply was no, but he would not purchase any items I may need but help get them installed.  So far I have been lucky enough not to need anything so not sure if landlord would still let me put those items in if needed.  Good luck.

All renters have "Renters Rights" you can go to your local town office or city hall and ask if they can help you find out the rights you have. All landlords are responsiable for normal wear an tear, and keeping the building safe to rent. I'm not sure if being disabled has any effect on your rights, but you could always talk with your landlord about getting such help with things that may need to be fixed to keep you safe.

An owner is always responsible for taking care of his property.

Agreed. I feel any improvements you make at your own expense would be from the kindness of your heart :peace:

I have read up on this and the information is very unclear.
It states any building needs to be safe for the disabled.
Improvements to the house I rent???
I had to laugh at the comment someone said about me paying for anything that will improve the rental.
I have lived here almost 10 years.. and it has not been maintained.. repaired.. or anything.
As I write this.. I hear the comments coming.. why are you still there if the owners are not maintaining the house you rent????
Good question.  I guess I just keep waiting.. they will do it next month.. type of thing.

Then the next month comes.. and nothing.  I could make a list of everything that is wrong.
Bottom line I guess is.. money.  You need money to move.  Disability doesn't pay much.  So I sit and wait........

Thank you for your comments.. I will be checking with my city or county to see if they have any information.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!!
