Being a Mommy
« on: February 19, 2012, 06:21:12 pm »
Why is it that when you tell someone you are a stay at home Mommy, you don't have a "real" job and are free to help them out when they need it?

I wonder the same thing, I just became a mommy and people expect so much out of you because you have "the time"...they should try waking up several times in the middle of the night...now that's a job

If you notice that it is usually people who do not have children.  Just explain to them you work 24/7, 365 days a year, no sick time, no vacation time, no holidays..........you are a driver, appointment maker, cook, baker, cleaning person, nanny, coach,  teacher, personal shopper, gardener, ironing lady, etc.,   And I think it is the best/most important job in the world.

Such people are only thinking of themselves. Learn to say no in very a nonconfrontational way and change the subject. They will  not believe you when you try to explain your day to them. You are doing what is most important. Keep up the good work. :notworthy:

don't let it bother you too much -- clearly these people have not had the pleasure of being a Mommy yet.

I have 2 little ones and it is a lot of work, clearly more work than I could handle each day which is why I went back to work!  :)

My husband just recently realized that i still have to get up every 2-3 hours at night for feedings and I still get up to go to work, etc.  I guess he thought our little one (5 months old) was sleeping through the night.... oh the joy of being oblivious to things that happen in your own home in the middle of the night.

I get that a lot too, that i dont really work, but running the home with 2 small children is more exhausting than just about any job i can think of. I have very little free time if any most days

It's the hardest job you'll ever love!
It really is 365, 24/7.  I feel like I'm on duty, even while sleeping.  I can't ever just leave it at the office.  My office is my home and I multi task so many things that get unnoticed.

I understand that a lot of time and energy goes into raising a baby, but I have to disagree and say that being a mother is not the same as having a job. It is a responsibility that some people choose to take on.

Simple tell them no. You can also say that you work in the home and leave it at that.

You're right it's not the same as a job. I mean after all at a job you get days off, at a job you get breaks and a lunch time, at a job you get vacation and can call in sick if needed. At a job you may be able to get health insurance, at a job you get pay raises, oh and at a job you can quit if you want. None of these things do you get when you are a parent and yet you still do it. Now which do you think really deserves more respect. the parent who raises the child the best they can and expects nothing in return other than their kids growing up healthy and happy, or the person who only does the job they do for the benefits they get.
