I think Spongebob can be for everyone. I grew up watching Rocko's Modern Life and Ren and Stimpy. So I think Spongebob is ok for all ages.

Personally I think Spongebob is a WASTE OF TIME for everyone.
I understand why some might like it, I myself used to watch it.
BUT, there is NO educational value what so ever!
I even read somewhere that some scientific research was done on it...
and people who watched it actually lost IQ points, or something of the sort.
Basically it makes peoples brains turn to mush.
Thats just my opinion though, I don't let my toddler watch it.

I think it's mainly aimed towards kids, but entertaining for all ages.  I'm not a big fan, but I know a few older people who are.

OK so here is what I have learned about Sponge Bob after watching an episode that I found way to mature for little ones.

1.  Sponge Bob was originally created for adults ( like South Park )
2.  Sponge Bob was originally supposed to be racy and graffic.
             - Mr. Crabbs lives in Bikini Bottoms ( The kids had been watching it for a long time, and I had never really paid attention.  One day I was really getting into it with them (uggh shameful I know) and realized wooooo Mr. Crabbs shouldn't live in Bikini Bottoms on a child's cartoon.  Well simply put, it's not intended as a child's cartoon, or wasn't in the beginning.)  Lesson for me here was to be more careful even when something looks appropriate for children, it might not be.  Writers of Sponge Bob, if your target audience has changed, please direct the names and interactions for your NEW audience!!  Thanks!

Both. I think it has layers- silly stuff for kids, -wit and one liners for adults

I thinks it's probably like the Loony Tunes of old.... For the most part, it's for children. However they also know that adults will most likely be around when the kids are watching, so they toss in some more mature humor to entertain the parents too. Sometimes the jokes are pretty mature (as cnalvarez pointed out) but then again it probably would go over the heads of most kids and only the adults would catch on to the joke.
